These are the opening lines of a controversial new book called Can I Tell You About Gender Diversity? which is being introduced into some primary schools as a resource for children, parents and teachers, and claims to be the first book to explain “medical transitioning” to children as young as seven.

“The books are designed for kids from the age of seven,” explains CJ Atkinson, the author, who identifies as queer and uses the pronouns they, their and them. Two-thirds of each book in the series is about a person who is experiencing the issue the book aims to discuss (in this case Kit and gender diversity), and the remainder is a section called “How other people can help” which provides factual information for others, including teachers and parents.
Kit, the protagonist, doesn’t like playing with dolls or wearing dresses and at the age of three asks to be called Christopher. “You see,” explains Kit, “I have a different gender identity than I was assigned at birth. Another name for this is called being transgender.” He begins to wear boys’ clothes, using he/him pronouns, changes his name on his birth certificate and explains that hormone blockers will stop him going through female puberty “and stop my body developing in ways that make me unhappy”.
He thinks he will take testosterone at 16 so he can go through male puberty with the other boys in his class; he goes on to talk about surgery as part of transitioning, about gender dysphoria and the use of different pronouns – while Kit has chosen he, his friend Amy is she, Sam has chosen they, and Leigh xe.

I went to my sister’s house for Christmas Eve.
There was a person at the dining room table who I did not recognize. This person had a beard.
With a furrowed brow, I finally figured out that this person was my young second cousin Alexis (female). S(he) is now “Alex”, has been taking testosterone, and is now living the life of a male. S(he) has also had her(ugh) his, breast tissue surgically removed.
NO ONE told me. My 15 year old nephew had to sequester me to explain it all.
How sad. It’s no problem for her to be a lesbian. Our family doesn’t care. I don’t care, no problem at all. We are all sinners. But to mutilate her body to satisfy a trend is heartbreaking. I hope she has made the right decision.

I hate this phrase “assigned at birth”–as if it’s comparable to registering to school and being assigned to such and such classroom. Offspring comes out and person with clipboard “assigns” them a gender.
