British Steel’s Close Shave

BBC

The UK government is taking control of Chinese-owned British Steel after emergency legislation was rushed through Parliament in a single day.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told MPs the government’s likely next step would be to nationalise the Scunthorpe plant, which employs 2,700 people.

But he said he was forced to seek emergency powers to prevent owners Jingye shutting down its two blast furnaces, which would have ended primary steel production in the UK.

MPs and peers were called back from their Easter holidays to debate the legislation in an extremely rare Saturday sitting of both houses of Parliament. It has now received Royal Assent after being passed by the Commons and Lords. More

  1. You’re all missing the point. Google DFAR. I received notification on Friday from the Government that some UK produced Aluminum and steel may not be DEFAR compliant. I’ll expand. U.S. manufacturers of military parts can only use raw material produced by very close U.S. allies. They update that list weekly. For example, Turkey use to be on it, no longer. That was the last major move. The UK is now in serious danger of getting booted off of our DFARS list because apparently they think it’s cool for the Chinese to smelt sub standard raw material and sell it to US military contractors under the impression it was UK smelt. Fuck them. Eliminate the UK off the DFARS list. These idiots are the very definition of self destructive.

  2. Blast furnaces? Really? The advantage to being on the losing side of WWII, is at least you got newer technology in your heavy industries.

That’s at least part n of what killed U.S. steel production.

Dear Industry: we don’t necessarily need you to bring production into the 21st century, but at least bring it into the late 20th century.
