California’s bait and switch: A percentage of Gas Tax will likely be diverted to job training for felons

CA political review:

The reason why California taxes continue to skyrocket.

Before the ink on the governor’s signature has dried on the largest gas tax increase in California history, Sacramento Democrats are fully intending to break their promise to dedicate the new revenue to fixing our crumbling roads. In the upcoming budget, there is a proposal to divert 30 percent of this gas tax increase to items and programs completely unrelated to repairing our roads and highways, such as park maintenance and job training for felons.

Regrettably, these bait-and-switch tactics are now so commonplace in Sacramento that few notice. For many years, billions in transportation dollars have been diverted from road building and maintenance to the general fund, which has created the crisis we are currently facing. Why would anyone think things will be different now with the new $52 billion car and gas tax hikes?  read more

  1. This is how they do it out there. If they actually fixed the roads and cut people’s commute times, they’d have the personal free time to interfere with the state’s indoctrination of their children, or worse, try and participate in Democracy! Can’t have that kind of interference… The next thing you know people might start questioning “the narrative”…

  2. I expect much the same shenanigans with Tennessee’s recently-passed gas tax. Only thing is, our RINOs don’t dare let the information out until AFTER the money has been diverted and spent.

  3. It’s amazing what people will put up with for decent weather. My fatherinlaw from socal gets up every morning, flips on the local news, yells at the TV for about 3 hours and then, as he puts it, “crawl back into my little paradise bubble and forget about it,” with arms out acknowledging his landscaping.

  4. It’s par for the course up here. They bump taxes on smokes promising that every bit will go to pay the increased cost of medical care caused by the aforementioned smokers but the tax goes into general revenue never to be heard from again. The fact is over the long run smokers actually aid the government because the die earlier and while consuming large amounts of medical care initially they don’t drag on and on. As well they don’t collect as much social security payments or other government benefits.

In fact, a lot of people think that social security (or CPP as it’s known up here) is some type of “lock box” where the money is as safe as house when in fact it’s mostly filled with IOU’s from provincial governments and the feds. I suppose that’s safe as the Feds can print money right up to the point inflation hits and the feds shut off the presses.
