Female television reporter makes history after becoming Canada’s first hijab-wearing news anchor
- Ginella Massa, 29, anchored Toronto’s CityNews 11pm bulletin last week
- TV reporter said she was the first Canadian anchor to wear a hijab on air
- She was praised for anchor stint but was hit with some negative comments
- Massa first started reporting on television in 2015 in Kitchener, Ontario
‘I always wanted to work in broadcasting or media in some capacity, and my real desire was to be in front of the camera, but in the back of my mind I worried about whether I could make it very far in hijab,’ she said.
‘I don’t think I really believed it could be a viable career until I was at Seneca, and landed my first internship in a newsroom.
‘I realized this was something I could be good at, and that’s what pushed me to work really hard, in the hopes that someone would see past my hijab and give me a chance to show my skills.’
Somehow, I don’t think we’ll be seeing this on the Canadian Tee Vee. (Or the United States.)

I don’t really mind the hijab. I do mind someone wearing a veil in public, for a variety of reasons but including personal safety. As to what she says, well, that’s what really matters.

There is a good reason muslime women are covered with tents.
I’m not going to get too hung up on this as her face is visible. We have lots of women in the city that where a head covering who aren’t muslim. I would have a problem if she were wearing a niqab or full face veil as that is a sign of religious oppression that serves to take away a woman’s individuality. Besides, CityTV has become a nest of lefties and PC cranks who probably did this to jack up the ratings.
