Car Carrier Loaded with Chinese EVs Catches Fire, Abandoned Off Coast of Alaska

Road & Track

A car-carrier ship known as the Morning Midas filled with hundreds of EVs has been evacuated by the U.S. Coast Guard some 300 miles off the coast of Alaska after an onboard fire engulfed the 600-foot cargo ship on Tuesday.

The ship originated from Yantai, China, on May 26 and was bound for the port of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, where it was reportedly set to deliver 3000 vehicles, according to a statement from the ship’s management company Zodiac Maritime. Of those 3000 vehicles, Zodiac Maritime told Automotive News that the Morning Midas was carrying about 800 electric vehicles, though the manufacturer of these vehicles is not yet known. More

  1. Double bubble, trouble and toil
EVs burning, but we’re saving oil!

Again I say the smoke and pollution from one EV fire is equivilent to the emmisions of a million ICE cars!
Not only that, but which insurance company or consortium is taking it up the ass on this and how long are they likely to keep putting up with these bombs?!?!?!?

  2. I wonder what will be a bigger ecological disaster, this ship going down or washing up on Alaska’s shores. Putting that fire out with all those EVs aboard must be a near impossibility.

  3. Dr Tar – Putting that fire out with all those EVs aboard must be a near impossibility.

Can’t be done. They’re gonna burn even under water, especially salt water! Even the ones that weren’t burning when the ship sinks will errupt and burn because of the water. I live in the rust/salt belt and am waiting for the winter salt slurry to eventually take its toll on EVs.
