Cartoon Time – IOTW Report

Cartoon Time

So, I was talking with a friend last night and he was trying to remember the name of a cartoon.

He described the villain, a frog that talked like Edward G. Robinson.

There was so many distractions I couldn’t think. He said, “it was a about a cat, and he had a mouse sidekick.”

I said, “yes, yes I know it,” but couldn’t think. I went on to talk about something else.

Well, this is the way things work. I was sitting around, and out of nowhere, it popped into my head – COURAGEOUS CAT. (and Minute Mouse.)

  1. In 1960 I was kindergarten age and only watched early morning TV that was local programming and Captain Kangaroo. However, I do remember the Kennedy Nixon debate and I do recall seeing Ike on TV. My leftist husb. was busy memorizing everything Uncle Walter was telling him and he hasn’t changed a bit.

Love this stuff. I have a ton of classics DVD ripped and loaded onto my 40TB Plex server (you read that right, 40TB) so I can will it to my surviving family. Loony Tunes, 30s Popeye, Tom/Jerry, Bullwinkle/Rocky, Mighty Mouse, Fleischer Supes, Casper, Mighty Heroes, Underdog, on and on. Also have all the Stooges, Little Rascals, and Adam West Batman too. All? Yes, all. And so much more. Even Gone With the Wind!

  3. I remember those cartoons, nothing like we have today – or maybe not. The Frog represents Humper Biden and the Ape is Biden himself. Both up to no good.

  4. Literally, before my time.

Has a whole Japanimation feel to it though, must have been shot before they started messing with the frame rate and quality of drawing.

  5. I’ve never seen this cartoon! Or maybe I did and just didn’t like it. My brain does that automatically. Anything I don’t like just disappears from memory — the trivial stuff, anyway.

We should do a favorite cartoon thread (and why).

  6. I still laugh at that one even after seeing it so many times before since I was kid back in the 60’s. Anyone else notice the problems that they were having with pronouns. This one along with Duck Amuck, Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half Century, the ones with Ralph Philips and his wild imagination etc. are classics for a reason because they’re funny and always will be. But my favorite is still Bugs and Yosemite Sam in the one with Bugs tricking Yosemite Sam endlessly up and down and down again on the high diving board. And Wile E Coyote and the Road Runner. And Michigan J Frog in One Froggy Evening. And don’t forget Foghorn Leghorn.

  7. As of late, it looks like our entire government is a cartoon…..lorded over by power hungry, non-Christian, America-hating, racist, lying, deceitful commies.

The challenge has been thrust upon US.

  8. Don’t remember ever seeing that cartoon series. And my memory of cartoons goes back a loooooong way. Starting with “Crusader Rabbit and Tiger Rags”. And others on Cpt Kangroo, “Tom Terrific” and “Felix the Cat”.
Then there was “Clutch Cargo”. Early “Popeye” on “Thimble Theater”. “Betty Boop” (reruns by that time).
And “Johnny Quest” (the original series).
But somehow that early 60s cat & mouse cartoon escaped me. Localized b’cast? There was a lot of that back-in-the-day.

  9. Geeze Louize, Aaron! So dark!

Favorite cartoon — Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam, for sure. But I also loved Quick Draw McGraw, El Ka-Bong and, especially Snuffles the dog who always swooned and floated in the air whenever he got a treat.

I couldn’t find an example in English, but you get the idea:

  10. @illustar – Kimba…that was a Japanese made cartoon as was Speed Racer…

Johnny Quest was another great one that could not be made today…

  11. Abby, dark? That’s the guy who did Lex Luthors voice for decades in all those superman cartoons.

The clip is from The Venture Brothers. A parody of Johnny Quest and the Johnny Quest universe of secret societies, super villains, and of course, 10 year old boys with jet packs and semi automatic handguns. Just….everyone is middle aged with lots of baggage…
