China Fires Up Experimental Nuke Reactor They Call An “artificial sun”

phys.org

China successfully powered up its “artificial sun” nuclear fusion reactor for the first time, state media reported Friday, marking a great advance in the country’s nuclear power research capabilities.

The HL-2M Tokamak reactor is China’s largest and most advanced nuclear fusion experimental research device, and scientists hope that the device can potentially unlock a powerful clean energy source.

It uses a powerful magnetic field to fuse hot plasma and can reach temperatures of over 150 million degrees Celsius, according to the People’s Daily—approximately ten times hotter than the core of the sun. More

  1. I’d like to read the article but the MORE link is fubar:

  2. BTW, I know nuclear fusion is not supposed to create any nuclear waste, but with China creating COVID-19, I sure as hell don’t want to find out with anything China is involved in.

  3. Well, of course…

In typical commie, liberal fashion…..spend untold millions/billions on shit that may keep you assholes as a top world power contender and ignore the suffering of your own people.

Somewhere there must be a few people that hold your desires in great esteem.

  4. Great. If it’s anything like thee covid, in nine months. they’re going to be saying Guatemala did it.

And when all the usual suspects start oohing and ahhing about the goddam moon dirt they’re schlepping thos week, please remember that WE DID IT FIFTY YEARS AGO.

  5. @Pogo — It’s my understanding that fusion reactors will produce some radioactive waste. Fusion reactions release neutrons which to some extent will interact with physical containment materials resulting in some transmutation, some of which will be radioactive. It would be an imperial shit-ton less waste than fission reactors produce, fortunately, but not zero.

  6. “Firing up a reactor is easy. Can they shut it down?”

If it was easy it would already be the main source of the world’s power. And shutting it down is as simple as turning off a light switch by shutting down the magnetic field used to create the necessary containment or shutting off the fuel flow.

A hydrogen bomb shuts itself off when it runs out of fuel, a reactor would do the same.

  7. Sum ting wong!
These thieves have stolen just enough technology to be reckless and dangerous with research experiments.
The upside is that on start up the machine shed enough radiation to sterilize the entire nation.
Now we need to just be patient and wait.

  8. This thing goes “BOOM!!” & watch the overall temperature of Earth increase by at least 100 degrees for a few centuries, until the heat cloud dissipates. Talk about “Man Made Global Warming”. The North & South Poles would become temperate zones & the tops of those permanently snow-capped mountains would become tropical & be about the only places to live since all the ice & snow would be melted & flood 80 – 90 percent of the planet.

    Uncle Al,
Yes I do agree with you that the radioactive fallout will be from what they use to load into it, but nowhere near the amount released like from the reactors that collapsed in Russia & Japan.
