CNN: Oprah Presidential Talk Underscores Democrats ‘Thin Bench’ in 2020

AIM: CNN senior congressional correspondent Manu Raju said he was skeptical that Oprah Winfrey could be a viable Democratic candidate for president and that all the talk about her running shows just how thin the Democrats’ bench is in 2020.

Raju made his remarks on CNN’s Inside Politics on Monday after talks of a potential Winfrey candidacy became a hot topic following her speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

Inside Politics host John King said that after the victories of Barack Obama and Donald Trump–which many experts predicted would never happen, that he has learned “never to say never” when it comes to politics and asked Raju what he thought of the Winfrey speculation.

Raju said he is not sure that Winfrey is ready for what will be a “nasty, nasty, affair.”

 

“She is someone who has got universal name recognition, people love her, she has got a lot of money, but the moment she steps into the ring, half the country will probably automatically hate you,” Raju said “She will have to throw a lot of mud. It’s going to be a nasty, nasty affair.”

Raju then went on to talk about the Democrats lack of a viable candidate in 2020 as to why the Winfrey speculation has reached a fever pitch.

“I do think it also speaks to this 2020 campaign for the Democrats is going to be a free-for-all,” Raju said. “There’s so many people who want to run and the Democrats—there really are not that many who people can see as beating Donald Trump. They have a pretty thin bench at the end of the day.”read more

  7. It won’t be “Nasty” for her. The media would treat her like a goddess. Questions like: How does it feel to be so smart? and Can you tell us all the challenges you’ve faced? will be the standard.

  12. Considering that she claims to be an advocate of women yet she knew for years about Weinstein’s perverse activities, she looks as weak as all the other Democrats on the wish list.
