CO: Pot users show up in ER with very specific symptoms, say Colorado physicians

LZ: Know of a marijuana user struggling with vomiting and abdominal pain — and who showers a lot to feel better?

There is a condition emergency room physicians in Colorado are seeing more of called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS. The disease is believed to be caused by heavy and long-term use of various forms of marijuana.

It’s something doctors hope to make others aware of as use increases across the nation. Patients typically end up in the ER several times before physicians realize the root of the problem.

Since 2009, when medical marijuana became widely available in Colorado, ER visit diagnoses for CHS nearly doubled in two hospitals where records were reviewed, according to Dr. Kennon Heard, an emergency room physician in Aurora, Colorado. MORE

  1. BUT they keep telling us pot is harmless and doesn’t have any of the horrible health affects like alcohol. *Shocking* to find we are now learning about all kinds of long term health affects for chronic users.

  2. that is Malaria! If your pretend-momma looked like hers does, they don’t grow enough pot to ease that pain. Wonder when the charade of the children will be stopped so those two can return to their real hippy leftist parents, and michael can lay off the wigs, makeup, fake eyelashes, and boob belts?

  3. Am I bad for not giving a shit?

I used to work with a nurse who fried her brain smoking pot. This was in the late ’70s when pot was not as potent as it is now. She was fired after several incidents where her rotted brain could have killed some patients.

It’s been said many time here that stupid should hurt. I hope it hurts bad. Just might educate some people to how bad this stuff is.

  4. I smoked weed in HS, College and for a few years after. Not a lot, mostly social joint passing and if they could find some sort of way to really regulate it at the Federal level I wouldn’t have a problem with legalizing it. But I’ll tell you coming up with the regulations and the mechanisms to support those regulations is going to be a bitch. In any event, there wasn’t much in the story about this disease associated with long term weed use. Too bad, it sounded interesting. I wonder if it’s just an bit of mass hysteria (I know, wrong word) who see it behind every admission of some doper who got a bad burrito.

  5. Problem with these sad souls is that they smoke way too much pot all the time, day and night, night and day. Moderation is the key to all intake of any substance be it food, water, alcohol, prescription drugs, etc. and their main issue is a highly diminished mental capacity. The stuff being sold, be it legally these days is one hit and that’s it, you’re good to go for the next 4 to 6 hrs., but no, not for them. I say let them smoke until they die. Zero F’s given. Here in cali. You used the need to have 215 card to go and buy at the dispensary as they’re known out here. But come 1-1-2017 you’ll only need a valid cali drivers license and be 21 or older. I expect to see an astronomical increase in criminal behavior and activity in and beyond this year. But hey, this is after all californication, the la la land of fruits and nuts. Pray for us America, as I’m praying for all of you.

  6. Stop the presses!
Medical maryjane was supposed to STOP nausea INCREASE appetite for people suffering with chemo and it was supposed to lower intraoccular pressure. Puking your guts out on this crap is upside-down crazy.
    STUPIDO!

  7. Cali did raise the tobacco age to 21 and legalized medical marijuana all in this last election. I expect the big tobacco co. to move away from tobacco and towards the marijuana biz in the next 2 yrs. mainly because it’s new and fresh and tobacco has run its course and there’s a shipload of money to be made, much more than tobacco has ever been able to produce and there are so many more things it can be incorporated into. I mean come on, would you ever eat a tobacco brownie, or drink tea made from it. There’s going to be a new revival of reefer madness in the near future., coming to a city near you and that’s a fact that can’t be denied. There’s even college courses for this now out here on how to grow and go into business for this. Lived here all my life and it’s very interesting to see all of this come to pass, very interesting.

  8. I won’t go into detail but when the policeman pulled me over and asked- why are you going 10 mph in a 40 mile zone, I said, I didn’t want to be early for a party. that was my last joint and ticket… The year-1960. 🙂

  9. That was real low strain stuff back in the 60’s, then you could buy an oz. for between 10 – 20 bucks. Now it’s going for about 250+. Woody herralson has a clothing line made out of hemp. It’s a very versatile plant and can be used and made into many thing. I read a story about a man who when he retired started a business that makes car part out of hemp, google, “car made from hemp”. He used to work for Dell, and was one of the reps we dealt with for computer purchases.

  10. I’m so shocked that legalizing an addictive drug is having negative outcomes. I really thought when CO did this that fairies would fly out of people’s butt holes and all dreams would come true.
