(The Center Square) – A Denver food-assistance program will get $2.5 million to encourage people on food stamps to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Live Well Colorado received the grant for the Double Up Food Bucks program, which provide a $1 for $1 match for up to $20 a day of fruit and vegetable purchases. The match is made by the grocery.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture stated earlier this week it has spent $52 million to incentivize people on food stamps to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Double Up Food Bucks is a program offered to Coloradans who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP benefits and formerly referred to as food stamps. The program lets recipients use EBT cards at local participating farmers markets and grocers. The program offers up to $20 a day to incentivize those wanting to purchase fresh produce grown in Colorado. more
Eat more fruits and vegetables? Encourage attendance at Judy Garland film festivals and volunteering at an Alzheimer’s hospice.
If it was up to me food stamps would be good for cheese, flour, milk, eggs, bread, fruit, and vegetables. That’s it. If you want Ho Ho’s, Coke, Bud Lite, or anything else you better have cash.
A days work for 2 food cards at the cafeteria.
joe6pak – If yer gonna start makin sense around here, I’m goin home!
Pissing away bad money after bad money. These clowns with tattoos, newports, beer, and expensive cell phones with their fucking food stamps should all be murdered and fed to the pigs.
What a waste of our hard-earned money, as we all know most of this money falls into the bureaucrat’s pockets..
Bidet probably gets his 10% as well…
.5 million for the actual program, 2 million for administration costs. Wanna bet?
Hire the food stamp recipients for government jobs.
They’ll be surrounded by fruits and vegetables. Problem solved.
The best incentive for making wise choices is the consequences for making foolish choices. Unfortunately, no one is allowed to be responsible for their own actions anymore.
20% of food stamps are spent on snack foods with cola being the most frequent purchased. Maybe poor people would eat better if they were not allowed to spend on junk food. But, that would be is racist.
Just don’t allow the purchase of processed food. Done. They got what they incentivised and what bigAgra lobbied them to do.
There was a time in food stamp history where certain items couldn’t be purchased with food stamps. Cakes, pies, cookies, chips, candy, soft drinks and ice cream were among the forbidden foodstamp purchases. They allowed welfare to buy all that stuff because the general population got to eat it. And, we get to pay for their medical care as well.
EBT/Snap food stamps are accepted for prepared food from a Deli, at least in some states. I think they shouldn’t be used for this, only for foods to be prepared at home.
That’s just raciss, white folk got no bitness telling black folk to eat like white folk.
We is as fat as we wanna be, shut up crackers and pay fo it…
A bag of rice and a sack of beans and a block of Gov’t cheese each month if you want meat turn over a rock and look under it. If you don’t want to expand your menu get off your dead ass and go to work for your keep.
Why spend more money to coerce people to eat more healthy?
Save money by limiting the current Food Stamps/EBT/SNAP to fruits, veggies, cheap meats (hamburger, roasts, pork, etc), fish, bread, cheese, and condiments.
Delete from the list; expensive stuff like lobster (etc), sugars (cookies, candies, cola, twinkies, etc), salty/oily snacks (chips, etc).
Save money…
The only way to get people on food stamps to eat healthier is to program the cards to not allow junk food or to limit it severely, not give them more money.
If the do-gooders want welfare rats to eat fruits and vegetables, send them to the White House.

Sure wouldn’t cost that much to limit what kind of food you can buy with an EBT card.
