Comey Declines To Testify Before Senate Intelligence Committee

4:35 p.m.

Former FBI Director James Comey has declined an invitation to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee next week.

That’s according to an aide to the committee’s chairman, GOP Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina.

The committee had hoped to hear from Comey in closed session following his abrupt firing this week by President Donald Trump.

The Intelligence Committee is in the midst of a broad investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties with Trump’s campaign.

The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee says he doesn’t think the FBI investigation into alleged links between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia is the reason Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr adds that, “To date, there has been no evidence of collusion.”

But Burr also says Trump’s tweet Friday about Comey was “inappropriate.”

On Friday morning, Trump wrote on Twitter that Comey “better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

In 2012, journalist Mark Bowden gave a talk at the Pritzker Military Museum in Chicago about his new book, “The Finish: The Killing of Osama bin Laden.” As part of the research for that book, Bowden spent 90 minutes interviewing President Barack Obama in the Oval Office. The interview went well — until it didn’t.

Bowden:

“As I stood up to say goodbye to the president, I looked down and my tape recorder had died. … That thing had always worked like a charm but there it was, just as dead as a nut on the table. So I said my goodbyes and as I was walking out of the Oval Office with Ben Rhodes, I said, ‘Ben, you’re not going to believe this, but my recorder died in the middle of that somewhere.’”

“‘Ah don’t worry about it,’ he says, ‘we record everything in here. We’ll get you a transcript before you leave.’ And he did.”

10 Comments on Comey Declines To Testify Before Senate Intelligence Committee

  1. He’s damaged goods. Walking into a circular firing squad would not be wise. The Demwits profess he’s the onliest to get to the bottom of Trumps Russia connection & 15 minutes later call for his carcass on a spit.

  2. History in the making:

Fired FBI director subpoenaed before Congress because he refuses to testify voluntarily.
Arrives surrounded by his personal lawyers.
    Pleads the Fifth.

    MAGA.

  3. @Wyatt, Exactly… This has all come off like some clumsy attempt by Comey to save his own ass by trying to appease whoever appears to be more in a position of power at the moment. And I’d wager all this comes from a bad call he made a long time ago that Hillary was a shoe-in to be POTUS; so don’t get in her way. Now, he has to cover up the fact that he covered up for her.
