  1. I do not know Corey Comperatore, never heard of him, but I once had the honor of serving under such men and there is something I can tell you from that. Chief Comperatore once wore five bugles as Chief of a volunteer fire department,
and this alone tells me much of the man. Volly chiefs usually rise through the ranks. These departments are not
large, the pay is somewhere between nonexistent and laughable, these cities are not politically important, and as such these
chiefs are not the sort of political DEI hires one would find bumbling incompetently around a Los Angeles or NYC. Leading
vollies is not like leading paid FFs, your manpower is uncertain, your men are not always available, and anyone can quit at any time with no financial consequences as they aren’t getting paid anyway, and you have to be protective of
your men so they could live to go to their REAL job in the morning, and often lead by example, so it takes a real leader of men to ringmaster that circus successfully.

And Chief Comperatore was that sort of man.

Because of his background, the man would have long ago accepted the fact that he could have to lay down his life at any time for complete strangers, and by the time he made Chief I’m sure he saw the possibility he would have to staring him in the face mask more than once and did not flinch or back away.

So it is not surprising that he would lay down his life for his nearest and dearest.

Mr. Comperatore was retired from his fire service, but you never really lay the Maltese Cross down. Had the shot have missed him, I am certain he would have seen his family to safety, then went out to danger again to see if he could help, men such as he always will.

But the assassin did not miss and he is gone, but he did save lives one final time, this time those most precious to him. He has gone to his Lord and has already been rewarded according to the Word, so we need not worry for him anymore. Honor him, yes, but not worry, for he is in the hands of a just God.

Our prayers then should be directed to his family, his wife who probably spent many a night after the tones dropped in worry that her man would not come back, his children who understood that Dad could have to leave at any time and come back smelling of stinky smoke, and all who
knew him and loved him, THESE we should turn our prayers upon, as they must carry on now and for the rest of their lives without him, and this can be an emotional and tangible burden beyond compare when it was nothing you could expect, and that’s certainly what this was, and in the most traumatic way possible, he died of evil in their arms while protecting them from it, and this is bound to leave a scar.

    Let us pray.

Dear Lord, we come before You today in mourning for a hero You placed in our midst for a time, Corey Comperatore, and on behalf of his family. Please Lord let them forget the terror and remember the love, give them peace from their nightmares and rest from their worries by letting them know that their dear Corey is in Your loving arms and that You are sufficient to meet all their needs, material, spiritual, physical, and
emotional, during this difficult time. We are grateful that You still send such men to walk among us even in these sin-struck times Lord, and we thank and praise you for that, and his family was doubly blessed that they had time together; but they are in need now Lord of Your touch. Give them peace and joy where now terror and loss and anger now reside, calm them and strengthen them to what they must do, protect them from the national spotlight sure to follow, deflect the hatred that the minions of the devil may send their way, and Lord supply all of their needs as those needs are great, but You are greater.

And Lord, we are not worthy but we ask you protect the man he came to see that You may start to heal this Nation though him, that his children may grow straight and tall and unafraid in the land you blessed for us and hold Your hand over us all even as you bring those who do evil in your sight to true Justice.

It is much to ask but You are mighty, Lord, and we ask this to Your Glory and in Your Mercy we pray,
    Amen.

…also, on a previous thread, I did a thing that may not have been understood. In my part of the world when a firefighter dies, especially
in the line of duty, a tradition known as “Last Alarm” is offered. This is where the attending firefighters salute as a mechanical siren is
spun up, and hold that salute until the mechanical siren coasts to a stop.

While Chief Comperatore was in fact retired from fire service and was there in a civilian capacity, I would argue that he did indeed
die in the line of duty.

    His highest possible duty.

Protecting the family that the Lord gave him.

And for that, I once more offer the tradition.

Last Alarm for Chief Corey Comperatory.

  2. Thank you above, but you are too kind. I only write my heart in this and pray as the Spirit moves me. Corey Comperatore is a worthy hero of our times, DOUBLY so if you read the letter at Anymouse’s link above.

…there is another facet to that tradition I mention that could be modified in this case to reflect the true honor this man deserves.

…the salute and siren are NOT called by on-site officers or men. The communication center is notified at the correct part of the proceedings, and all the fire apparatus nearby (and there is a lot, sometimes the bed of a truck has the hose removed and carries the casket and there are ALWAYS raised aerial ladders with an American flag suspended between them) has their external repeater speakers fully turned up.

The County Dispatch then calls something like “Last Alarm for Chief Corey Comperatore, Chief Corey Comperatore returning to quarters, Godspeed Chief Comperatore”, then the salute and siren after a short silence.

Its powerful if youre there because its unifying, we have all answered that call and know he did too. The dispatch is usually answered immiedately and you almost expect it to be answered, to hear his voice respond, and the fact that there is no answer from him and never will be again, and that others must now answer the call in his stead, in a continuance that all of us must do in every aspect of our life.

The fallen is honored best by those he leaves behind taking up his mantle as best they can.

…now imagine a ceremony such as that, but with the voice calling that Last Alarm being the true President of the United States, the man this honorable man came to hear, the voice on the speaker being President Donald John Trump.

This man took a bullet and surrendered his life to save his family when he came to hear a man he thought was the man who could help make this Nation one they could live in.

I dont belive President Trump would have any reservations about honoring him at all.

    Rest In Peace, Corey Comperatore.

The Lord will protect your family, and the rest of us will close ranks before them, and we will carry on and defy the evil of those who took your life in your stead.

    Evil will not win, Chief.

    Evil will NEVER win.

  3. The IOTW Chaplin

    Indeed.

And perhaps his calling could be changed from the Factory job.
Recent reread of the history of the Plymouth colony suggests rising from the masses to the pulpit.

  4. Im a responder, not a doctor, so I cant do doctor things; and Im laity, not a minister, so no, Im not worthy but I CAN act in an emergency as can we all, with the Lords help and grace. Theres a lot of reasons but mostly I have not been called and have no annointing, so whatever good you may see occasionally is the Lord speaking through me, as he can anyone as He sees fit, no matter how broken the vessel may be.

    All praise to Him always.
