“If you think we live in the land of the free, you should try to be black like me.” This is the chorus to country singer Mickey Guyton’s 2020 song “Black Like Me,” and a focal point of the New Yorker’s latest feature piece on Guyton, titled, “Mickey Guyton Takes On the Overwhelming Whiteness of Country Music.” The gist of the article is pretty simple: country music is racist, and it needs to be disrupted from within by woke artists like Guyton.
Predictably, “Black Like Me,” received a nomination for Best Country Solo Performance at the 2021 Grammy Awards. In 2020, Guyton co-hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards with Keith Urban, where she was nominated for the New Female Artist of the Year award, and during Blackout Tuesday in 2020, Spotify put “Black Like Me” at the top of the Hot Country playlist. Never did care for the so-called “new breed” of country music artists like Garth Brooks, Wynonna & so on. Give me Johnny Cash or Hank Williams Sr. over this new crap any day of the week & twice on Sunday. This new generation are nothing like the good old days!

Nashville has become densely populated by Chicagoans that brought both their money and their liberal politics with them. We have a friend who is a financial advisor, he moved to Nashville from Knoxville 3 years ago. He was gobsmacked at the money that was coming down, but despairing of their politics.
