Military Sealift Command has drafted a plan to remove the crews from 17 Navy support ships due to a lack of qualified mariners to operate the vessels across the Navy, USNI News learned.
The MSC “force generation reset” identified two Lewis and Clark replenishment ships, one fleet oiler, a dozen Spearhead-class Expeditionary Fast Transports (EPF) and two forward-deployed Navy expeditionary sea bases that would enter an “extended maintenance” period and have their crews retasked to other ships in the fleet, three people familiar with the plan told USNI News Thursday.
Based on the crew requirements on the platforms, sideling all the ships could reduce the civilian mariner demand for MSC by as many as 700 billets. More

The Navy should’ve kept the USS Kitty Hawk CV 63 instead of scrapping it. I know that’s just me wishing that but in my mind the Navy could still always have used a backup aircraft carrier in case of an emergency.

The navy has been plugging holes with merchant mariners and US Coast Guard ships for quite some time, and that is pathetic. Who’s here to stop the drug smugglers and human traffickers, while the navy has our Coast Guard patrolling the waters of other countries?
And when our ships of the line can’t be resupplied at sea—resupply has been a huge problem for our navy for a while now—those ships must leave their stations and make long trips back to base. The fact that all of the ships in drydock are support vessels is not a good sign. All our enemies have to do is wait for the toilet paper to run out on the aircraft carriers off their coast.
So US Navy ships have to pull into port for refueling/replenishment. That’s how the USS Cole got bombed.

I’ve read retired sailors that keep in touch with their active counterparts we have warships (not sea lift as referenced in the article) that are “welded to the pier” for lack of bodies. We can’t build ships because the people that knew how retired and those companies won’t hire a new guy for the old guy to train before he times out.
It’s one aspect of the coming (already here) crisis of competency that is starting to change our standard of living. Flynt Michigan water system is an example, another water system in Mississippi. The old white guys that knew how to keep it working are gone. This will accelerate.
