Cutting Edge Technology Blatantly Stolen from Duke University By Chinese “Student”

NBC calls their story “Education or Espionage?”  Their question mark is to avoid a lawsuit.

I’ll say it. This was blatant theft by the Chinese government. Come sue me.

This is the stuff Trump was warning about.

NBC-

Dr. David Smith of Duke University is one of the world’s experts on something called “metamaterials.” Liu, who says he had long been a fan of Smith’s, came to the U.S. a dozen years ago with the express intent of studying at Smith’s lab. Some observers, including the former assistant director of counterintelligence at the FBI, believe he was actually on a mission from the Chinese government.

Dr. Smith is famous for creating a metamaterial that functions as a so-called “invisibility cloak.”

He became Smith’s protégé. In late 2007, Liu won Smith’s permission to bring two of his old colleagues from China for a visit to Smith’s lab. The two Chinese researchers, whose trip was fully funded by China, worked on a few projects during their three to six-month stay, including the invisibility cloak. During a trip to the lab one day when Dr. Smith was not present, they took pictures of the lab and its contents, focusing on the apparatus that allows scientists to measure the cloak. They brought photos and measurements of all the equipment used to fabricate the cloak back to China.

Much to Dr. Smith’s surprise, an exact replica was built in Liu’s old lab.
Asked if Duke supports President Trump’s initiative to limit the access of students from China in certain research areas, Schoenfeld said, “We think it is essential for universities to work together with the government to develop policies that protect national security and intellectual property while also maintaining the open exchange of ideas that is essential for the advancement of science and research.”

Duke University told NBC News it has not considered revoking Liu’s Ph.D, and that the opening of a Duke campus in China has played no role in its decisions about Liu.

  1. We need to figure out a more effective deterrent for dealing with these criminals. A strongly worded letter of disapproval hasn’t stopped the bad guys from being bad. The Saudi’s might be on the right track as far as tactics go. Might be a good idea to be a little less conspicuous about it.

  2. Asked by this reporter is he could show me a sample of the “cloak” material, Dr. Smith replied, “Err, ummm, well, I’d really like to, but you see, one of the lab assistants removed the ID tag and without that clue of where the stuff is we haven’t been able to find it.”

  3. The Chi-Com might as well own Duke University. There is a huge population of Chinese “students” at Duke – been that way for years. Good luck keeping any intellectual property secure. Way too late.

  4. Notice Duke just couldn’t admit that maybe President Trump might be right:

“Asked if Duke supports President Trump’s initiative to limit the access of students from China in certain research areas, Schoenfeld said, “We think it is essential for universities to work together with the government to develop policies that protect national security and intellectual property while also maintaining the open exchange of ideas that is essential for the advancement of science and research.”

  5. All Chinese nationals should be immediately expelled from all U.S. Universities, and deported. Any University that refuses, should lose all federal funding and grants. Duke should lose theirs immediately. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

  6. Why this leads one to think the communists in US academia are complicit with the communist Chinese on stealing intellectual property.
Of course China is a very big benefactor of the US University system.
The Chicoms donate several $100s of Millions and steal $Billions of National Security secrets.

  7. If Duke receives research money from the government then the government should TELL Duke to revoke Liu’s doctorate. The Feds should also try Liu in absentia for espionage and if found guilty then sentence to 25 years in solitary at one of America’s SuperMax prisons. Then file for his extradition. Also perhaps the FBI should start investigations of foreign students working on sensitive projects instead of trying to screw around with the President and phantom russian election fiddlers.
