D.C. Mayor pushes $15 minimum wage

WT: D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to introduce legislation that would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour despite cries that it would unduly burden city businesses and make the District less attractive to companies seeking to set up shop.

The Democratic mayor announced her proposal amid a national movement for increasing the minimum wage. California and New York hiked their hourly minimums to $15 last week, and officials in neighboring Montgomery County, Maryland, are preparing a similar measure.

Under previous legislation, the District is scheduled to raise its minimum wage from $10.50 to $11.50 an hour effective July 1.  Read more

  1. 6 of the 10 highest per capita income counties in the country are next to DC.

I don’t believe the government has any business setting any kind of wage floor or ceiling. But if they’re gonna go down that road, they couldn’t have picked a better spot. I don’t think menu price increases are going to matter a whit to this high toned crowd.

  2. Can’t live on $15/hr in DC.

Not very well, at least. Rents are outrageous.

Should raise it to $50/hr. (~$100,000/yr) so they can live more comfortably. Oh, yeah, and free shit, too. Free phones, free interwebz, free dinners, free MadDog 20/20 …

    izlamo delenda est …

  3. And people wonder why companies are fleeing the US en masse. If the dem/fascist stay in power, pretty soon, instead of telling companies who they can hire and making it impossible to make a proft, they’ll just take over all businesses like Venezuela.

  4. The government is eager to rip you off at every turn.

If the government actually gave 2 shits about the citizenry, to make life better for all citizens, welfare programs would be cut and the minimum wage would remain the same. The net benefit to the government is identical to simply raising the minimum wage. The citizenry, however takes it on both fronts, up the ass on welfare and income tax. Thank you, uncle sam, may I have another?

  5. A sad part of this irony is that the employees will be fired immediately, as soon as the machines come off the truck:
no need to keep them around to train their replacements.

    Thanks, obola !

  6. Effin idiot. Running businesses out of town. Fewer people will be employed, local governments will take in less revenue. Does not make sense to suck up to people who will still vote for her even if she cuts wages in half and doubles their taxes.

  7. If old mother government can mandate wages why can’t it mandate jobs? Instead of having to work at Mickey D’s for $15.00 per hour the lowly dreebs should be assigned to work at the crony capitalists offices on J Street for +$200.00 per hour

  8. Ahab, that is the point of “free” higher education.
It will give the government the authority to limit entrance to certain carriers and coerce students into one picked by that 450 lb gal that used to work for the DMV.

  9. There’s a McDonalds just down the street from me that has just put in automatic order takers to replace most of the cashiers. They caused havoc when they were first brought in and these models do not take cash but people are slowly but surely starting to use them. When they build the ability to take cash into them (the Target stores in Canada did before they left) you can probably eliminate 6 jobs during rush times and 2 during quiet times. Currently McD’s head office is working with a company on a sandwich maker several of which are serviced by one person and that can take care of another three jobs.
McD’s has a lot of problems right now with declining sales, product inconsistency between stores and even shifts at the same store as well as a bad rap from all the lefties out there (Tony Bourdaine for example takes any chance he can to badmouth them) but don’t be surprised when they become the poster child for food service automation and tens of thousands of jobs go out the door. This minimum wage and constant union war on them is only quickening that evolution.

  10. Isn’t it amazing how stupid ideas seem to spread like computer viruses among leftist brains? Municipal politicians seem to be particularly receptive to totalitarian stupidity.

  11. I wonder how automation will work at the drive-through when the customer pulls up, opens the door to his beater because the window doesn’t roll down, then wants to negotiate how much food he can get based on how much money he has because he couldn’t do the math before he ordered.
