DAN RATHER STEALS VALOR – IOTW Report

DAN RATHER STEALS VALOR

Dan Rather, a man who did not finish Marine Corps basic training, has somehow gotten his hands on a photo of himself that was most likely taken for a yearbook (a yearbook for “graduates”, which he was not) and published it in his biography, passing it off as if he was a marine.

Look at this grinning fool.

Rather has now suffered another major embarrassment. The former anchorman of the CBS Evening News has been accused by a website devoted to exposing military corruption of falsely claiming to have been a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The editor-in-chief of the website www.MilitaryCorruption.com, retired U.S. Army Major Glenn MacDonald, says he stumbled across a published photo of Rather in a dress blue Marine Corps uniform in his book Rather Outspoken and decided to investigate the claim. The photo caption, “as a young Marine,” clearly indicates Rather had been a member in good standing of the Marine Corps.

But the truth, MacDonald says, is that Rather left the Marines before completing boot camp and the photo was obtained under questionable circumstances.

It has been known for years that Rather was discharged before he finished basic training. Those facts were established by investigator B.J. Burkett in his book Stolen Valor.

MilitaryCorruption.com took the story one important step further.

“In our exclusive story, we interviewed a senior retired Marine noncommissioned officer who was in around the same time as Rather claimed to have been in the Marines,” MacDonald said. “He told us the photo in question probably was the result of a policy the Corps had then of putting a blue blouse (from dress uniform) and ‘white cover’ (the saucer cap) on each ‘boot’ several weeks into their training to make sure the Marines had head shots of members of each training cycle to use for the Marine yearbook each successful Jarhead received at completion of USMC boot camp.”

  1. liberals have no shame

i went thru the navy ocs program

the photo is standard process sometime during the 16 or so weeks of training

i would never had used this photo (or even kept it) had i not graduated from the program

this is how liberals think, there is no shame among them, lying is part of how they operate

  2. They take those pictures early on in boot camp. They slap the hat on and the “dress blues” uniform is just a dickie kind of thing that straps around your neck and barely covers your nipples. Everyone scowls menacingly at the camera cause we are bad ass killers, no one smiles.

  3. How disgusting. Progressives/Liberals daily stretch the limits of what is imaginable. I guess his booked is aimed at idiots and fools. He’s not even “technically correct”. You’re not a Marine until the Marines tell you you’re a Marine.

  4. I call BS, when my brother dared to crack a smile for his photo the DI literally chocked him around the neck, my brother’s smile dissipated rather quickly.

  5. in the circles he runs around in, his shame won’t be for lying, it won’t be for washing out of the corp, no, it will be for having enlisted or showed up for the draft in the first place.

  6. it would be technically accurate to state that Dan Rather served in the Marine Corps! After all when he was in boot camp what did the Marine Corps consider him to be a fetus, a non-person or a Wookie? However, it would also be accurate to state that he washed out of the Marine Corps!

  7. ???????
    I disagree.
He no more served in the Marine corps, than a rookie cut from training camp, played in the NFL. He tried out, then washed out. You don’t become a Marine until graduation. Before that, you have zero standing in the military.

  8. Nonsense!… I remember when Brian Williams and Dan Rather were the first men to step on the Moon… Well… I don’t exactly remember it, but it should’ve been that way. So that’s like the truth, right?

  9. @Richard P — Hate to break it to you, but E.R.Murrow was the beginning of the end. He’s the one who made going after McCarthy and everything else conservative, vogue. He was the progenitor of journalists like that guy who used to produce PBS’s Frontline. He’s the guy history revisionist Ken Burns fashions himself after. Just enough truth and noir to capture everyone’s fancy. Fake news.

  10. A much more interesting story would be to know why he washed out of the Marines. A little digging should be in order on this.

He had rheumatic fever as a child. – bfh

  11. Ah ha! Maybe.
“”What he did, he signed up for the military twice, not the Marines,” Burkett said after thoroughly reviewing Rather’s military records.

But Burkett notes that Rather “never got through Marine recruit training because he couldn’t do the physical activity.”

    Rather ‘Unfit’

As Burkett explains in “Stolen Valor,” Rather “was discharged less than four months later on May 11, 1954 for being medically unfit.” As a boy, Rather had suffered from rheumatic fever.

“This is like a guy who flunks out of Harvard running around saying he went to Harvard,” Burkett said.”

  12. Photoshop 101.

Despicable Leftist. Probably cried nonstop and wet his bunk.
Is there even any proof he was even inducted?
And yes, I remember that day in 1968 when Brian Williams first set foot on the Moon. For all mankind.

  13. #DANwasNEVERaMARINE

Riding on the coattails of those who earned the right to be called Marines.

Like riding Walter Cronkite’s coattails at CBS.

Both the Marines and CBS shit canned him.

  14. Vanity-claiming to be someone or something that you are not while those that actually are suffer-die and give all for this country. People like this need to be sent into the real fight (mix of things) and then we shall see how they fair.. Stop disgracing those of us that served………

  15. My sons picture sits on my desk here. He is currently 1000’s of miles away. He is an honorable man who actually earned the title of a United States Marine. I assure you this kind of crap is not well received in the military. Personally, i will be happy to throat punch the old lying bastard.

  16. If I know a guy is a Marine I always buy him a drink.
Never was one, nor wanted to be one, they watched while I slept.
I wouldn’t spit in Rather’s empty rice bowl.

  17. @????????: “it would be technically accurate to state that Dan Rather served in the Marine Corps!”

No, it would not. Members serve. People who wash out of basic have not been accepted into the service. They did not achieve the basic level of competence to be considered “members” of that branch.

I know this sounds like equivocation, but I assure you, it is not.

If an individual does not complete basic training, it is because they gave up due to mental or physical hardships they were not willing to undergo, or their trainers determined they were unfit to continue.

I’ve seen both. Military service has demands that can be beyond what some people can muster.

That said, if Dan Rather is claiming service in the USMC when he did not complete basic training, fuck him and the horse he was afraid to ride.

  18. Sorry, but technically is was still a marine! I didn’t say he was a good Marine but nevertheless a Marine. I would guess that a Marine is required to sign induction papers and take an oath prior to boot camp, not after boot camp!

  19. Screw that piece of cow shit.
    I lost a kidney as a kid.
I signed every waiver I could get them to put in front of me.
    No fooking go,
I wanted to be a Marine so bad..
So some puke that washes out niggles a photo from out of some old database and calls himself a Marine.
He’s no more a Marine than I am.
    Asshole,

  20. This thread prompted me to do some digging.
    Looks like:
    1. Any medical (cardiac) problems serious enough for discharge would have been apparent during his enlistment physical.
    2. Washing out of Boot Camp does not entitle you to call yourself “a Marine”.
Flunking the initial hiring interview at NASA does not entitle you to call yourself “an astronaut “. Applying and being rejected by a Medical School does not entitle you to call yourself “Doctor”. Etc.
    3. 1954 was peacetime (Korean War was over in ’53). There was apparently no draft into the Marines. Other than Rather’s own unreliable claim, is there any official proof he ever had any involvement with the USMC at all?
    3. I was surprised to learn that Dan Rather was married to the beautiful and glamorous Morgan Fairchild. That was immediately after her divorce from Jon Lovitz.

  21. PS. Claiming cildhood rheumatic fever was a well known dodge during WW2 to get yourself declared 4-F. (Childhood unexplained “fainting spells” and undocumented “seizures” were other guaranteed 4-F’s, so well known that Bob Hope and Jack Benny used them as punchlines on radio & movies).
Reporting childhood RF would have immediately disqualified Rather at his initial pre-physical.
So if that’s actually his grounds for discharge (if he was ever actually IN), it would have to be because he wanted a discharge loophole and suddenly “remembered’ a childhood RF once he wanted out.

Wonder if some local criminal judge offered him the old ” jail or the Marines” choice in 1954. Did he knock up some high school floozy? Shoplift from Sears? Drunk driving?

  22. @Rufus, #3,
    Bada bing ttssshhhh

Yeah, I think the ol’ rheumatic fever this bootcamp shit is hard, loophole.
The physical is very specific, there is a list, they don’t ask you to name them, they name them, then ask. He’s a pussy, was never a Marine, you don’t ‘just remember’ rheumatic fever.
