DARPA Hands The “Sea Hunter” Over To the Navy

Emperor Augustus once observed that using Rome’s legions was like fishing with golden fish hooks – you really didn’t want to lose one. The same can be said today of the US Navy’s reliance on carrier battle groups. One lucky hit could be a national disaster for the country.

Recognizing the vulnerability, the US Navy has been working with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to develop the next generation of sub hunters, an autonomous vessels with no crew known as a “Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV).” The first proto-type,the Sea Hunter, was recently transferred to the Navy for further sea trials. 1. I hope the project goes better then the LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) project has been. That’s been a disaster from the word go. This one looks like it has promise though I’m concerned that the primary contractor has been CyberDyne Systems.

  2. Not too impressed with the outrigger pontoons. They look like they were tacked on after a major stability failure in the original design. And probably a major reason why the thing crawls along at 27 knots.

  3. Our carrier groups exist to protect the carrier. And those pictures you see of the ships in one frame are a lie. They are spread WAY out when expecting trouble.

The Aegis cruisers handle airborne threats, our attack subs (I’m too long out of the loop, not sure what class is deployed now) watch for subsurface threats.

I trust our subs more. Harder to spoof, and those weapon platforms and the sailors that operate them are very likely the finest examples of military prowess this country owns.

Hurts a bit for this old soldier to admit that. But, I’ll give where it’s due.

  4. Lowell. Too many girls, minorities, and lefties in our service academies today. Remember two of our “State of the Art” boats being captured by a bunch of arabs in skirts? I’ll leave it at that. Just another cranky old soldier.
