Definitely Not a Bag Full of Drugs

Officers on Tuesday night stopped a man and a woman driving a stolen car in Southeast Portland, and they found much more than a stolen car, the Portland Police Bureau said.

When officers pulled over Mia Rochelle Baggenstos, 37, and Reginald Lamont Reynolds, 35, near Southeast 162nd and Division, they searched the car and discovered cash, a loaded revolver, scales — and a bag that had “Definitely not a bag full of drugs” printed on it, with drugs inside, the Police Bureau said in a post on X Wednesday. 1. “Reynolds faces charges of delivery of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle. Baggenstos was booked on the same charges, but prosecutors indicated they wouldn’t bring charges against her, court documents show.”

  2. @Dr. Tar, it depends on the predicate for the stop. If the cops knew the car was stolen and that was the reason for the stop then searches incidental to a lawful arrest are permitted. If the stop was for a traffic infraction and the search was done prior to them discovering that the car was stolen, then yes, the drug and weapons charges will be “fruits of a poinous tree”.
