A district attorney in Vermont may face impeachment after several colleagues accused him of repeatedly making insensitive and demeaning comments.
On Thursday, the Vermont Department of State’s Attorneys and Sheriffs released a redacted report of an investigation into Franklin County State’s Attorney John Lavoie. Lavoie has spent decades as a prosecutor but was elected to the top spot in Franklin County just last November, and now he’s facing serious pushback after a career of off-color “banter.”
The majority of the accusations made against Lavoie involve women and their physical appearances. He is alleged to have made a comment about one colleague’s “magnificent boobs” and to have repeatedly referred to another woman as a “whore” and perhaps even a “slut bag.”
He is said to regularly use the “c word,” the report stated, and to criticize women’s weight and eating habits. When a young woman once asked about what she should have for lunch, Lavoie allegedly “responded by pinching her midsection and saying ‘I don’t think you need to eat today,” the report claimed. On another occasion, an employee discussed purchasing a piece of exercise equipment, and Lavoie supposedly replied, “[O]h yeah, those are for fat people like you.” more
