Dems May Have Won the Battle in WI, But They Lost the War

AP

The Democratic-backed candidate for Wisconsin Supreme Court defeated a challenger endorsed by President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk on Tuesday, touting her victory as a win against powerful interests and cementing a liberal majority for at least three more years.

Susan Crawford, a Dane County judge who led legal fights to protect union power and abortion rights and to oppose voter ID, stood on stage surrounded by the court’s four current liberal justices and celebrated her win as a victory for democracy while also taking a dig at Musk. More

Not so fast there, liberals. We won the referendum enshrining voter ID into the state constitution. Here

  1. @Jethro It would appear that a number of democrats voted for the referendum. The total vote in the supreme court races was 2,364,372 and the referendum total was 2,288,224, about 80,000 who voted for one but not the other. The supreme court went to the democrat by 57% while the referendum was approved by 62%. Even if every republican voted for both, it wouldn’t be enough to carry the referendum by that much.

I can’t explain it, but I’m glad a lot of democrats did the right thing and put voter ID out of the reach of the state courts.

Looking at abnormalities like that screams voter fraud to me. And remember, I’m from California. Democrats are occasionally stupid enough to fix the vote for, say this judge, but ignore the rest of the legislation. I can’t see how you would vote yes for her and yes for voter I.D. It was the same in AZ. Republicans voted for Trump, but not for Kari Lake? Bull shit.

  3. She won on the abortion issue. The libs’ one majority issue. Apparently anti-abortion conservatives just can’t shut up and leave it alone long enough to settle into power and would rather just lose on everything including abortion, while feeling “principled”.

  4. The ad campaigns in WI were vicious on both sides. I couldn’t stomach them from either but the accusations of letting raping/ murdering criminals off with light sentences was made by both. Crawford also went after Schimel for not processing rape kits, which he refuted in ads that probably were too late and not enough to overcome the negative.

I don’t recall seeing any ads pro or con for abortion. Everyone in state knows, democrats love killing babies, especially Madison democrats.

If you look at the link I posted earlier, it maps the counties and how they voted. The supreme court race had about four centers of democrat voting (Lake Superior, Green Bay, Madison and Milwaukee). The referendum carried in every county but Madison and Milwaukee. It’s an anomaly all right.

  5. Don’t kid yourself that the top issue wasn’t abortion:

We live in a representative republic. That means that lawmakers need to represent the wishes of the majority of constituents. Obviously, the majority is in favor of voter ID. This is not a head scratcher.

That means that if you are against abortion, it’s dirt stupid to expressly or implicitly threaten to enforce your position by fiat, rather then by winning over “hearts and minds”.

While anti-abortion absolutists do make up a significant portion of the GOP (unclear whether it’s a majority), the overwhelming majority of the whole population stands against this position for some or all of the following reasons:

    — They don’t care that the blastocele, embryo, or fetus is “human”. So are hair follicles, sperm, ova etc. The only way this matters is if something happens upon conception (and it’s not a “unique human being” — see twinning and fetal absorption, and stop being biologically ignorant).

    — They don’t care that it’s “human” because there isn’t an equal degree of carrying on about other ostensibly innocent human lives lost, e.g. in wars.

    — They either don’t believe in God at all, or don’t believe in the dogma/interpretation of your religion, and think it’s incredibly disrespectful that you do not respect their beliefs and want to impose yours.

    — They do not believe that God inbues eacb fertilized egg with a “soul”. See above re twinning and absorption, also consider spontaneous abortion which happens orders of magnitude more than induced abortion (the “late period”). Some religions believe that the soul enters upon first breath, and that some people don’t even believe in the concept of a soul.

    — They don’t care about “heartbeats”, which is a life/death perception of primitive people who did not know about fetal development, and thus it’s unclear why a heartbeat should carry more meaning than, say, brain or nerve development, or functioning liver, lungs, or kidneys.

–They don’t care that you say it’s “murder”, because murder only applies to a state-defined ILLEGAL homicide, and they either don’t think it’s an “illegal” killing, or they don’t believe in your religion at all.

    — They believe that induced abortion to a point, perhaps based on development of ability for pain or suffering of the fetus, or some other reason, should be permitted for some or all of the following reasons: fetal deformity, rape, mother’s health or situation, or just “choice”. And until you come up with facts that can change hearts and minds, you cannot make a convincing argument — all you can do is terrify them that you will implement your religious dogma which they do not share.

We do not live in a theocracy. While anti-abortion absolutism based on religion may be strong enough in the GOP to move its platform, it not only is not shared by the majority of the population, it’s not even shared across all Christian sects.

  6. The shitlibs have actually won, because that bogus state supreme court will declare the voter ID amendment “unconstitutional” the first chance they get. That’s what they do in California and every other shitlib state in the US. What the voters want doesn’t matter for shit if the democrats don’t want it… and vice versa.
