Bobby Joe Long was convicted in 1985 of a murdering at least eight women. He’s been sitting on Florida’s death row waiting for his last meal for over 30 years, despite the plea of the friends and relatives of victims.

That all changed when Republican governor Ron DeSantis set the date for May 23 at Florida State Prison, making Long the first of hopefully many who will finally receive justice. More

    “What evidence do you have of that?”

    “He was convicted, wasn’t he?”

    And when that doesn’t work the “real” killer will appear out of the woodwork.

  6. There have been times when a really innocent person has been executed, but when proof of guilt is so evident, execution should be made mandatory immediately. The elimination of one proven killer keeps that person from ever having the opportunity to kill again. Which has actually happened when a killer has been paroled. Mercy should be deserved, not given just for the guilty to avoid the penalty of his/her crime(s). Multiple appeals keep the lawyers in business.

There should be no Death Row — if a person is convicted of murder (and the chance of an innocent person being executed is extremely rare nowadays), then the most humane thing is to execute him within 48 hours — no years and years of ‘sitting’ on Death Row, waiting for the axe to fall. Humane for the perpetrator and especially humane for the victims’ families.

    He could stand outside in the rain. If any rust forms, he is most likely a robot.

    If he has to oil his joints, he is most likely a robot.

  19. I’ve been paying room and board for this POS for 34 years????
    DeSantis is making Scott look like a feckless pansy. Haven’t heard boo from Scott since he arrived in DC. I imagine he’ll perform like my R representative…. collect a paycheck, lay low til election time and mail me a glossy postcard touting his conservative positions/votes (same as the past 12 yrs) and go back to sleep for another two years.

I have recently been reading about Giuseppe Zangara, who was arrested for trying to assassinate President-Elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt and mortally wounding Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak on February 15,1933 in Miami, Florida. He fired five pistol shots at the back of Roosevelt’s head from only twenty-five feet away. While all five rounds missed their target, each bullet found a separate victim. One of these was Mayor Cermak, who died of his bullet wound some three weeks later. A scant two weeks after that, Zangara was executed in the electric chair. This was perhaps the swiftest legal execution in twentieth-century American history. There was no interference by the hand wringing opponents of capital punishment, or appeals by the American Civil Liberties Union back then, and Zangara’s confession was enough to set him in Old Sparky. Justice wasn’t delayed or denied in Zangara’s case.
