Disturbing Information From an iOTWreport Tipster About Egregious Unemployment Fraud

I received a phone call request from a longtime reader of iOTWreport to discuss some disturbing information that his father had uncovered while working at a jail in the Midwest.

The tipster asked to be off the record for fear of retaliation by both the state, and the criminals, who seem to be acting in concert with one another, considering that nothing is being done about this blatant unemployment fraud.

Our hope is that after publishing this we get some queries from some bigger sites who may want to pursue this. This needs to be corrected.

Our tipster’s father overheard a phone conversation between a frequent jailed criminal and his sister. During the conversation the criminal asked his sister to apply him for unemployment insurance. The sister thought the request to be idiotic because inmates cannot collect. To make matters more improbable, the inmate did not have a job the previous year, which disqualifies anyone automatically.

The dad made a mental note to keep abreast of this guy’s phone conversations. Sure enough, during his next phone call, she informed him that he qualified and he would begin collecting payments. She even calculated that when he left jail he would have accumulated $24,000. It seems there are jailhouse lawyers that are informing inmates that they can indeed collect if they apply.

Appalled, the dad began making phone calls to see how this was even possible. After going through many channels, he finally talked to someone at unemployment that might be able to alert the agency to this ridiculousness.

The woman assured him that this was improbable, and even if it did happen the error would be caught and payments would be stopped.

I find that to be the improbable part. If there is some algorithm that closes this loophole, why is it set to catch people after payments have begun? Wouldn’t the same algorithm be useful when people apply? Why would there be inquiries into recipients afterward?

The sad state of America today is that the business of giving away benefits grows the government, and that is the goal of the left. With absolutely no understanding, or care, that the money spigot eventually goes dry, they dole out the money gleefully, confident that this buys voter loyalty for years to come. Lording over a dystopia is sufficient. They just want to be overlords.

This story pains me, considering what has happened to many great Americans during this hideous dempanic shutdown. To think that the worst of society, many who are in jail for robbery, are being handed the money by our state without having to use a gun, is depressingly ironic.

  1. Don’t confirm or deny but I’m gonna guess Illinois.

I could tell you stories going back to the late 1970s about how systemically corrupt that state is, both R and D, down to the county level. One incident led to a class action suit involving corrections that went to the Supreme Court, which involved a close relation of mine.

  2. Figures. Some POS inmate is getting unemployment payments, and even though I qualify, applied, and received the debit card, I still haven’t received a payment, and it’s been 8 fucking weeks.

The phone lines are loaded with recordings that say they are experiencing heavy call loads and that they can’t take calls. The website has no way to contact anyone by DM or email to find out what the hell is going on. I have overdue bills, and my savings has been wiped out, but Im supposed to “be patient”.

But never mind, inmates can get unemployment. yay.

Assuming he stays in prison. He may already be out the Rona door, spending his loot.

  4. Unless he was working at a United States call center, for 25¢ an hour. Because the Hyderabad call center, commands 27¢ an hour USA! USA!.

If they shut it down, because of Wu Flu, then he’s unemployed, because of Wu Flu.

  5. Absolutely could be happening in many states. A note from the Employment Services side that may explain why some get away with it – these employees are working in excess of 12 hours a day often 7 days a week involuntarily. Many are not getting overtime and are threatened if they complain about it. It’s an ugly situation and I expect some employees have simply given up and just send the approvals on. Unfortunately the ODJFS here in Ohio was understaffed to begin with thanks to actions of prior Gov Kasick and it’s not getting better. He shut down quite a few of the field offices and centralized.
Of course there are plenty in metro areas who have never cared about doing the job correctly.
Another fabulous thing about Ohio is when hotlines to apply were first set up the number given to the public was a porn call in #. That’s some great quality control.

Every one I know pesonally who would jump on a story like this has retired or gotten the heck out. I hope someone contacts BFH and pursues.

One good thing in Ohio. I talked to a friend yesterday who manages a ‘where’s the beef’. He called laid off employees back to work and some refused as they make more on unemployment. He contacted ODJFS and they terminated these people’s benefits for failing to take a job offer. It’s a small start.

The tipster could try contacting the Inspector General’s office in that state. Some will get on it but others will simply be D hacks.

  6. Don’t the unemployment applications require the name of the employer and date of separation — and wouldn’t the ostensible employer be notified to verify the fact of employment, separation date, and that the employee didn’t just walk off the job?

    > And to add insult to injury, you can make more collecting unenjoyment + the COVID bonus, then working. Who wouldn’t want to take advantage of that?

It’s an interesting turn of phrase. Popular, too. Saying that when you’re fired (h/t to The President), the state unemployment, that was set years ago, plus the United States CoC approved plague dole, adds up to more than you were being paid to work, means that you are now “taking advantage” of (of whom, I don’t know). Most definitely not that all the time you were working, you were being “taken advantage” of (by whom, we all know).
