Stock market flirts with records after heavy round of earnings
U.S. stocks moved higher Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq trading above previous closing records as investors focused on a flurry of earnings reports.
The S&P 500 SPX, +0.69% rose 13 points, or 0.6%, to 2,278, with eight of 11 sectors trading higher, edging above its previous closing high set on Jan. 6. Materials, financials and energy sectors were leading gains, while telecoms and health-care stocks were the biggest laggards.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.66% was up by 121 points, or 0.6%, at 19,920, with more than two thirds of the components trading higher.
