Who thought there could be anything bad about getting a Hummer.
The owner of a Hummer electric truck was shocked to learn replacing his tail lights is a rather expensive venture.
“Had a shocker today,” the owner wrote in a Hummer EV Facebook group. “A new passenger side rear light for the Hummer EV; $4,040 just to buy it.”
Car review website the Drive confirmed General Motor’s list price for one tail light is $3,045. Without factoring in labor, the list price for a set of tail lights runs for nearly $6,100, a cost equaling more than 5% of the Hummer EV’s MSRP.
Not surprising. Car makers have been into this racket for years, but this Hummer example is the worst I’ve seen.
I shudder to think what new tail light lenses cost for some of the cars I see while I’m driving around. The bad ones seem to be Cadillac SUVS, Kia Souls, Volvos, and newer Priuses.
Gee Wally, whutz the kilowatt rating on that tail light?!?!?
“Additionally, the Hummer EV is a fairly limited-run vehicle thus far, meaning parts are generally more expensive until economies of scale kick in.”
Marques Brownlee did a pretty good review on you tube on the hummer EV. There is no way there is any sort of pool of buyers for that thing. There is maybe 10 people in the whole country that that thing would make sense for.
Over $3000 in labor to INSTALL that tailight??
Thanks, obola !
It’s a small price to pay for everyone to know how woke you are!
What a hum-dinger.
Talk about saving energy, why are car manufactures wasting redesigning things that work the same way but it just doesn’t fit the new car?? I just paid, $35 plus tax, for a rear wiper blade (non dealer price) on my Volvo. Not the arm just the blade. The way it snaps on has been redesigned and is not the same as my other 5 year older same model Volvo. Also its 100% plastic no metal. Let me guess just how long it will last before it ends up in the worlds plastic waste pile.
If these Hummers are like the previous generation, most will end up in the ghetto, where there will be a robust after market for “used” (stolen) tail lights.
The Hummer EV is about $120,000, so that one tail light is over 3% of the total cost? That’s nuts. Especially considering GM pays it’s contractor (in China, no doubt) less than $10 each.
And I thought $600-$700 for a tail light for my Silverado was outrageous.
At that price one could file an insurance claim to have it replaced, no? Then everyone pays for it beyond the deductible, so it’s not like the owners of these things care.
I thought $1.99 for one 1157 tailight bulb was high!
Just replaced two lights on my 2018 Rav4. $250. i asked about it. It is the manufacturers who design things (so the do it yourselfers cannot possibly make the repair) hoping you take it to a dealer for the repair. Was told some vehicles require removal of the entire front or rear bumper assembly to replace lights which is where the labor charges kick in.
There’s a guy here where I live who needed a new battery for his Tesla. Took them four months to replace it and it cost him $24,000, but according to him, I’m the dumb ass for driving a truck with a gasoline engine.
I had a hard enough time finding a replacement tail light for my “rare” car that was made for only 3 years from 2016-2018, about 12,000 were made. Took me 4 months to find a replacement. It was frustrating as hell, but wow would I be pissed if the same thing happened for 18x the price for a current year vehicle. Screw that.
@WTF Over?
where’d you find a bulb so cheap? Last bulbs I bought were closer to $5.00 for a pair of incandescent brake light bulbs.
Saw this on the interwebs the other day ONE ELECTRIC CAR
BATTERY
500 Tons of Ore to refine 25 lbs. of Lithium
900 to 1000 gal, of fuel to move the ore
Lithium is refined by using sulfuric acid.
The mine at Thacker Pass requires 75
semi loads of acid a day.
One electric battery for a Tesla requires
25 lbs of Lithium
60 lbs of nickle
44 lbs of Manganese
30 lbs of Cobalt
200 lbs of Copper
400 lbs of Aluminum, Steel and Plastic
To produce one battery takes tremendous
amounts of energy supplied by coal, nuclear
or gas fired power plants.
If you believe this is Green Energy, then
we are all in trouble.

Tony R – If these Hummers are like the previous generation, most will end up in the ghetto…
Nope! Not even the inner-city natives are stupid enough to want an electric ghetto cruiser!
^^ Good luck finding a charging station that hasn’t had the copper torn out of it!!
Anybody stupid enough to buy an EV shouldn’t bitch about the price for replacement parts, they should expect the price to be high.
I’m looking forward to the day when little dirtbags move from stealing catalytic converts to BATTERY PACKS!
^^^
CRACKLE!
BANG!
Dirtbag go POOF!
(I told him not to cut the blue wire…)
