  1. Many of those I’ve never tried, they’re not in my area (SLC UT). Or I’m not willing to drive across town for a ‘burger.
Mickey Dee’s – Not unless they’re the last and only place open would I get a “meal” from them.
I would swap Five Guys and In-&-Out. I’ve had I&O a couple of times, they’re good, but I was never impressed. Whereas FG’s I think are much better.

    Just my two nickels (inflation).

  2. @F4UCorsair – grew up on those belly bombers…

We missed going to a Hardees (not listed) on our past trip. There aren’t any around here where we live! No Arby’s either…We were looking forward to Hardees, but the timing was never right! They charbroil the burgers, I believe, like Wendys. Always been a Big Mac fan, but really ONLY so often.

I’d eat anyone of those listed above, but the kitchen stove top is the best place, maybe the backyard b-b-que second best place.

Oh, what about your average diner?? Bacon, with cheese and grilled onions, medium rare.

  3. I remember taking my son to Five Guys to celebrate him passing the driving test (at his request). I didn’t know what to expect.
Wow! – That was the best burger and fries I ever ate. I now search them out when I am traveling.

  4. ghost, they just recently closed the Hardees here in downtown Alpharetta, GA. I don’t where another one is around here. Downtown Alpharetta has turned fancy townhouse high-rise craft beer hipster. I reckon that ‘70s Hardees was a blight on progress. Expect a fancy apartment building on the site, with Starbucks downstairs when it moves from the old strip mall down the road.

And speaking of Arby’s, you ever had a Danver’s roast beef sandwich? Beat hell out of Arby’s, but couldn’t compete and folded all their Atlanta branches mid 80’s. I once found a Danver’s in Tupelo, but that was twenty years ago.

  5. I have never had a single one of them.

I’ll get one at a Longhorns, Raffertys or some place.

When I was a kid, we had Krystals but I have not had one of those since 1992 maybe

  6. I haven’t tried all the burgers on that list, but the ones I have tried are ranked so horrifically wrong that I can say with confidence that that list is as useful as a CNN/CBS/NBC/etc. Presidential election poll.

  7. Best cheap burger in Spokane, a Whammy double cheese burger from Dick’s hamburgers downtown, although they are not as cheap as they used to be but still a bargain. I can remember and it wasn’t that long ago when we could feed my family of 5 for about 10 bucks, those days are long gone now. Hardee’s are Carl’s Jr. in the western part of the country. I do like 5 Guys but I only go there very rarely because their burgers at my age are a heart attack on a bun. Never been to Fat Burger, I would get killed by my daughters (AKA dad’s food Police) if I ate there, if their fat burgers didn’t do me in first.

  8. There are too many variables to make an educated opinion….
what time of the day or night is it?
Have you been drinking?….recently or in the last 12 hours?….
What are you in the mood for?….
    Are their fries good?…
    Flat top grilled?…flame broiled?…or charcoal?….
Would breaking out the bucks for a good eggs benedict do more for that long term relationship?…
Drive thru or carry out or sit down?

A better question might be ‘where have you had the best restaurant burger?’….and I’m thinking that ordering a burger in a restaurant precludes having a burger in a fancy steakhouse because why would you go to a steak house for a burger?….DUH!!!…. and I can grill a ribeye as good as any fancy steakhouse. I also perfected the best bloody mary you ever had, if you like how I make em’….LOL…

  9. for a good laugh and some good critiques, go on YouTube’s It’s A Southern Thing channel and watch all the Bless Your Rank videos. Matt does some hilarious but spot-on reviews of beer, biscuits and such-like

  10. Random thoughts; In n out is a clean, well run enterprise, not a “good” hamburger. The “Quarter Pounder” is a good hamburger for the money. Five Guys is good, but overpriced. Wendy’s rarely disappoints.

  11. Used to like Burger Chef when they were still around. Had the fixings station there. You could whip up a pretty good burger. If you’re ever in Michigan’s thumb go with a friend to Port Hope Hotel in Port Hope, Mi. Order 1 burger and 1 fry. You’ll both leave full and the foods delicious

    3
  12. Can’t stop thinking about burgers so I had to Google Port Hope to find out the name of the burger I referenced. Its the Leroy Burger. Lots of pics and reviews.

  13. After I type this having the best burger ever. 40 years ago it was TOMMIES

having 2 “Double Double animal style”

As a finically hurt undergrad the $0.16 “big Mac” and $0.10 milk shake were frequently my lunch.
Only if gifted would I eat a “Big Mac” today. Same with
“Whopper”! I think the Big Mack is $3.50 today! Been decades since I bought 1!

    3
  14. Not a big fan of the big chains, but a couple of my favorite local joints would be Nuway which is a loose meat crumbly burger, and my all time favorite would be a Hiboy double cheese with onion rings. That is last meal worthy.

  15. Charcoal burgers in Glenwood springs Colorado will set you free….
Griff’s burger bar in Arvada or Denver Colorado is a must for hangovers….
Jiffy Burger in Smith Center Kansas is as close to a 1960’s McDonalds that I’ve had….
I need grease. I need to have 4-5 napkin burgers….

  16. I keep seeing In-N-Out hamburgers being touted as such a great burger.
I was in Vegas earlier this month and tried one.
    I was really unimpressed.
I rank it at the BOTTOM.

  17. Not on the list but better than anything there. The Big Hootie, two 1/2 pound patties served on a toasted brioche bun, topped with lettuce, tomato, onions and your choice of cheese.

Then there is the view. Got to love Hooters.

    2
  18. In-N-Out is #1???
Their burgers are dry and taste stale like they’ve been made with Grade B or Grade C beef.

But at least Hardee’s isn’t on the list. They’re really just Carl Jr.’s without the hot dogs.

    6
  19. Some of the best burgers I’ve had were at Bachi Burger in Las Vegas, on Windmill. But my last visit there, they were gone. Victim of Covid?

In-N-Out is OK, but in my opinion, 5 guys is better. One thing about I-N-O, is their buns are a special recipe that springs back and keeps its shape.

  20. Quite frankly, super expensive Allen Brothers burger cooked over natural charcoal in my ancient Big Green Egg. Fries I hand cut and fry in peanut oil.

Five Guys fries are great. Probably better than mine. But the rest of that schlock is awful.

    2
  21. You guys are giving me a great idea.

    In-n-out should merge with Hooters.
    In-n-outHooters. The possibilities are endless.

    Fiddlesticks.

    Never mind my dirty mind.

    Move along.

    3
  22. Remember my first “Deluxe Husky” with the clear cellophane wrapping from Hardees!

But I love my five guys (alternating stuffing burger with fries) cause they are juicy dripping things with may on the tomatoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2
  23. Unfortunate name – In-N-Out Burger.

Sounds like it’s a warning that it’s a food that won’t agree with ya, the whole stuff through a goose kinda thing.

Never ate one though. I’ll have to take Mashed’s word for it that it deserves the #1 spot. Or is at least a contender.

Locally there’s a few Fat Patty’s places that makes some pretty good burgers, their Pretzel Patty is a favorite of mine:

    https://www.fatpattysonline.com/menu/food-drink/burgers .

However, Steak N Shake Frisco Melt is pretty good, too.

  24. In 1976, there was a place in Bellevue, Nebraska, right outside of Offutt AFB, called Bronco Burger. As you walked to the counter and ordered, you could watch butchers cutting up beef halves hanging from hooks and stuffing the trimmed, lean meat into grinders. The cooks took the fresh ground beef directly from the grinder and formed it into patties and slapped it on the grill. Another guy would dump large sacks of potatoes into a peeling machine and the taters would go next into a slicer and then straight into large deep fryers. Talk about fresh! They were large, juicy and delicious. I hear Omaha still has a location today.

  25. Quarter pound sirloin burgers from Costco. Martin’s potato roll, cheese and fresh Vlasic dill pickle slices. maybe some steak rub sprinkled on before you grill. Charcoal or gas, your choice.

  26. I think the bestest burger I ever had was once, at the Heart Attack Grill, downtown Phoenix. Burger & fries cooked in lard. YUM! The Phoenix place closed down, I think there’s one in Las Vegas. Maybe.

  27. We liked Goody’s on route 23 in Wayne NJ back in the ’70’s. White Castle was so great after a night of teen boozing but you had to get at least 5 burgers for that excellent morning after taste.
