Feds Serious About Installing Anti-Drunk Tech in Your Future Vehicle

Motor Trends

Of course, this opens many cans of worms. Will NHTSA advocate a warning system onboard that alerts the driver that they’re impaired? An ignition interlock that prevents the car from starting and driving at all? What if there are false readings? A sober passenger taking whatever onboard test exists in the driver’s place?

One also could imagine the sort of arguments advocates of unfettered freedom might come up with: Someone eluding an attacker, but who had previously had a drink, being locked out of their means of escape due to technological misunderstanding. Of course, these concerns must be weighed against the more than 10,000 preventable deaths from drunk drivers annually. More

  1. Looney Tunes dancing in tap shoes, topless LBGT event, hidden cocaine, gay sex and we have another year to go.

Maybe they need to police themselves first and leave us the hell alone until they regain some credibility.

  2. Install a breathalyzer in congress, but it would only work on those that actually show up.
Doctors kill more people than guns, that could be a topic for discussion.
I’m sure big pharma is lead of doctors in deaths.

  3. Knew a guy that had too many DUI’s and had to have a ‘blow box’ installed. Any booze detected would not allow the engine to start. He always used a 12 volt tire inflator to fill a balloon just the right amount and then released it into the ‘blow box’. His engine started every time. Dumb Fvck politicians have been defeated before they even start.

  4. This tech has been around for awhile, just not very commonly used. And here’s one of the problems with it.

Back in the dinosaur age when I was working on cars, guy showed up wanting some tires. The contract was concluded and our buster went to get the car, and came back puzzled, reporting the car wouldn’t start but this thing mounted under the dash lit up. The owner was consulted and said, reluctantly, it was a DWI interlock ordered by a court and you had to blow into a tube for it to allow the car to start. We had no one willing to blow in guy’s tube, so he had to start it himself both going in and going out, despite the fact we weren’t supposed to let customers in the service bays for obvious safety reasons.

This wasn’t common tech in the ’80s so it wasn’t a huge disruption.

But if it becomes common, this is one one the problems that will have to be addressed.

You may also find out hoe many mechanics drink their lunches.

…but too, you will note I said it was a DWI device, not a DUI device. That’s because Driving While Intoxicated (drunk) was the ONLY concern under the law then, and Driving Under the Influence (of alcohol OR drugs) was not so much a concept.

    And there’s another rub.

…once we allow this particular step towards tyranny, what’s next? Do they say, “The Brethalizer is a good START, but now we need to analyze you for OTHER impediments. Put a drop of blood in the tray in the dashboard to contine”. Then what? “We’ve detected too much testosterone in your blood. Studies show higher testosterone levels have a higher likelihood of road rage incidents. Your driving privileges are suspended until you counter with enough estros to lower them”.

The more control you allow, the more they will take.

How long until you have to Bluetooth your phone for meme analysis, and if you’re too critical of Democrats in your social media your driving privileges are revoked?

…once the camel gets his nose under the tent, it’s pretty tough to make it stop at the nostrils…

  5. Is drunk driving really a big enough problem to federalize it & make EVERYONE’S car give the driver a breathalyzer test every time they try to start their car?
Or is this just another power grab that will be justification for more freedom-theft?
I’m pretty sure it’s the latter.

  6. Who owns the fukkin car?
ALL these cocksuckers … uhh … cockroaches … need to be exterminated.

Filthy fukn maggots just sit around thinking of ways to fuck America.
    When will enough be enough?

  8. Interesting in all these debates, the topic of a “drinker’s license” is never floated. Include in that these days THC products.

Specifically, if highway safety is the goal, we don’t care who drinks or how much at home.

But, yeah, medical “errors” (malpractice) kills many more, so fix that first.

  9. It’s not about “drunk” driving. It’s about anything they choose to describe as “impaired” driving. Hit the brake too many times? Speed up and then slow down (passing) too many times? Change lanes too many times? Just drive too many miles, or (GPS-assisted) too aimlessly or where you’re not allowed to go?

“Assisted driving” features too. It’s not about “safety”. All dangerous intentional future freedom control with intentional feature creep.
