Fiat Chrysler: $4.5B Plan Would Add 6,500 Detroit-Area Jobs

Epoch Times: DETROIT—Fiat Chrysler announced a $4.5 billion investment plan on Feb. 26, it said would increase its workforce in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs by about 6,500 jobs to build all-new or next-generation SUVs, in a move touted by officials as an uncommon opportunity to revive the regional economy.

Under the plan, the company said it would reopen a shuttered engine plant in the city and convert another in the same complex into a future assembly plant for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and a new, three-row, full-size Jeep SUV and plug-in hybrid models for all.

The Motor City was once home to about a dozen massive auto production plants, but a rash of closures helped to push Detroit’s unemployment rate to a peak of almost 29 percent a decade ago. The new Chrysler plant would be the first to be built in Detroit since 1991 and is expected to add 3,850 jobs. The company said in a news release that it would add another 1,100 new jobs at its Jefferson North Assembly plant in Detroit, and roughly 1,500 new jobs at facilities in the neighboring suburb of Warren. The investment would roughly double FCA’s hourly workforce in the city. MORE

  1. More or less what happened to Detroit back in the 1960’s & 70’s is what decided Amazon not to permanently hitch their wagon to the Democrat Jackass in NYC or in… e-yup, they have signalled that they are so over Freeattle now too.

    Great job AOC & Sawant!

Amazon don’t dare move in, at that point the Freeattle freakshow would have had them bent over and they would have been forced to take it dry if that is how the progtards chose to break it off in their ass.

    Detroit seems to be learning.

  2. @JDHasty What are the chances Bellevue avoids the pratfalls of the Seattle City Council so Amazon moves more and more jobs across the lake? I know many people would like that commute much better.

  3. Going out on a limb and assuming these plants are mostly automated…. because the potential skilled labor isn’t anywhere near that area.

On the other hand, you can buy literally dozens of crack houses for pennies on the dollar.

  4. Too bad Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep quality has dropped. There are always several models on the worst resale lists.
    That being said, I wanted a Dodge Challenger 1971- 1974. I didn’t want to pay $4000.
I’ve seen some go for $500000 or more at Barrett Jackson auctions on television. Of course those were equipped with a hemi and 4 speed with virtually no miles.
If I’d gotten one as a 24 or 25 year old I’d have driven the hell out of it.

I say the smart money is on Bellevue and maybe Newcastle & Renton/Tukwila. All are exceedingly well managed cities.

It gives their employees access to Seattle, which seems to be what their prospective employees want w/o the drama.
