Firefighters try new way to smother hard-to extinguish EV fires, tossing big blanket over vehicle

JTN: A new technology is being deployed to help firefighters deal with electric vehicle fires – a big blanket.

Firefighters in West Bend, Wisconsin, a town of 32,000, north of Milwaukee, are using a fire blanket, along with a fire suppression tool to combat EV fires, reports local ABC-affiliate WISN.

The firefighters pull the blanket over the burning EV and throw the suppression tool under the car. The suppression tool floods the space under the blanket with a powdered aerosol, and along with the blanket, the tools help smother the fire.

Because lithium produces oxygen when burned, it’s difficult to smother a burning lithium-ion battery. Firefighters use 40 times more water than on a gas-powered car fire. The fire also burns much hotter than a burning gas-powered vehicle, and they can reignite up to a month later. more

  1. Electric car fires are going to become quite common. Lithium batteries are very sensitive to voltage. Under 3.0 volts per cell will damage the battery . Over 4.20 volts per cell will also damage the battery . Electric cars have thousands of cells and all it takes is one bad cell to start a fire.

  2. I didn’t see the merit in sns’s video. he said blankets might not work but he had no experience with them. he said faulty wiring not installed by a professional might be dangerous. a lot of might bes but no data
everyone likes to talk about the Chevy bolt but they present no data. nothing. the bolt was responsible for 17 fires before the recall in 2019 but zeros since. the lack of facts on this site is austounding

Those are not MY videos, those are videos from an active duty firefighter/trainer who deals with these things every day. I didn’t say listen to me, EV fires were after my time, but this guy knows about them better than you or I ever will.

It’s just facts from one who’s been there. He doesn’t have an ax to grind one way or another.

  4. It’s a holiday. I’m drinking. SNS I love your in depth analysis but when it comes to electric vehicles, you are a fraud. If you had any sense you would own one. I used to think like you about them

  5. My favorite part about ev’s are the memes showing them hooked up to gas generators and the power plants that burn natural gas or coal to produce the electricity.
If you like ev’s, great. Get one. Get ten.
Just know the mining of the minerals for the batteries leaves large open pits that expose the carcinogenic minerals and are never filled in. You will be funding China and mines that use children as cheap labor and you are not saving the environment.
