Florida: Judge rules ballots were illegally destroyed in Wasserman Schultz race

FOX: A Florida Circuit judge ruled Friday that that the state’s second-most populous county violated state and federal laws by destroying ballots from a 2016 Democratic primary race which Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz won.

Circuit Judge Raag Singhal decided that the records were wrongly destroyed because the laws require elections offices to keep the ballots in federal elections for 22 months. Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes destroyed the ballots just after 12 months, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The judge also noted that because the ballots were subject to a lawsuit, only a court order should have allowed their destruction.

Snipes “has not presented any evidence refuting that the public records sought were destroyed while this case was pending before this court,” Singhal said.

Gov. Rick Scott’s administration announced shortly after the ruling that Florida’s Department of State will send election experts to the Broward elections office in the next election to “to ensure that all laws are followed.”

Snipes’ predecessor was fired from the elections office by former Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida Senate after failing to ensure a smooth election process in the 2002 Democratic gubernatorial primary, according to Politico.

The lawsuit was brought by Tim Canova, the defeated Democratic primary candidate who sued the elections office after seeking to check for voting irregularities. He lost the primary race by nearly 7,000 votes to Wasserman Schultz, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee.  more

  1. “to ensure that all laws are followed.”

That’s the double-speak equivalent of “so that it never happens again” while the guilty get a free pass. If there are no consequences for Treason (and yes, undermining the electoral system is TREASON) then, not only will it continue, but it will increase until the electoral process is a more obvious travesty.

  2. Election “corruption”! With no “evidence”!?

    OH NOES!

People (real people… Party members… not proles) might… I mean should… lose their jobs!

Graciela? Aisha? Who’s wearing the fishnets and feather duster this week? Somebody make sure the desk Debbie used looks nice.

  3. Perhaps WE should get one day a year when laws don’t apply to us. That would be a nice gesture.
Kinda like when Fish & Game allow all to fish without paying for a license 1 special day a year.

Then it won’t be so burdensome the rest of the year when we fear and pay while our betters do whatever the hell suits them while they rule us unwashed schlubs.

  4. So that’s it??? The judge says “illegally destroyed” and no one gets a hand slap? So what’s to stop anyone from repeating the destruction in the next election? I guess laws have no teeth if it can be connected to a political motive. “But officer I was speeding to my election place, so don’t waste your ink/time.”

  5. Has anyone noticed that whenever a democrat is in trouble that all records of the transgression disappear? How long is it going to be before someone actually serves time for destruction of public records? I know that I am not alone with being disgusted by acts such as these and am tired of waiting for justice to be served. What is it going to take to stop election tampering? Perhaps a aggressive department of Justice would help.
But we don’t have that, do we.

  6. Surprise, surprise, surprise. So the head of the DNC rigged her own primary election in 2016.

The evidence is probably on her laptop. The one she claimed was hers and that the Capitol Police had better return it to her, and then changed her mind and said it belonged to Imron Rwan.

Has anyone heard anything on Rwan, the Paki spy, lately?

  7. Remember, in the good ol’ US of A, democrats are always innocent because you need evidence to prove guilt and law enforcement always gives prominent democrats an opportunity to destroy all evidence proving their guilt. On the flip side, Republicans are always guilty because law enforcement will manufacture evidence out of thin air while destroying exculpatory evidence whenever possible. And most of the republican party leadership seems perfectly okay with this.
