Former astronaut James Halsell has pleaded guilty to the deaths of two sisters four years after he was involved in a car wreck where they were killed along Hwy. 82 in Tuscaloosa County.
James Halsell, 64, pleaded guilty to to manslaughter and assault driving under the influence at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse Thursday in the deaths of Niomi James, 11, and Jayla Parler, 13. He subsequently received a split sentence where he would serve four years in prison and 10 years years on probation. More
Shoulda stayed in orbit.
Why the hell did it take four years??
Just another display of how little we value life anymore.
Asks self, “Why are we reading about this now?”

“Oh.”
One of the few hard and fast rules in my life, and I do enjoy a couple of fingers of good bourban or some vino on occasion, is NEVER drive after even 1 drink or ride with someone who has been drinking.
Will that preclude any accidents? Of course not but why push the odds anymore than needed.
Nice to reinforce that all humans make mistakes, except for left leaning politicians who seem to posses special powers to evade our laws.
@Immortal Fish – “… :: clicks link, sees photo :: …”
Didn’t even need to go that far – the names were telling enough.
Let that be a lesson to us all, if you’re going to do drugs, drink to excess and drive be sure to be elected to office as a democrat first.
I’m assuming this story is getting traction because Halsell is a former astronaut and has plead guilty, why is there another reason?
I was hoping to read that it was Mark Kelly!
@Dr. Tar. I think it’s terrible when any child is killed, born or unborn, regardless of race or gender. These days, I don’t have a lot of company in this opinion.
Remember that other astronaut chick that tried to kill another woman because they were fighting over some astronaut dude? WTF is up with these people? lol
If there were 30K astronauts, no one would blink. But there are only a handful of them that have gone into space. What are they putting in their Tang bottles?
The dead kids were not wearing seat belts, and thei mother is blaming it ALL on the drunk driver.
MJA
She bought diapers and pissed herself while driving to make good time on the long drive!
Oh well, even John Glenn turned out to be an asshole!
@MJA – “…But there are only a handful of them that have gone into space. What are they putting in their Tang bottles?…”
Does that make them the Moon-Tang Clan?

That’s not the issue. If the guy hadn’t been driving under the influence, driving 100+ mph, those 2 girls would still be alive regardless if they were wearing a seat belt or not. He should have gotten a stiffer sentence.
@GoldenFox The chance that one would meet an intoxicated driver going 100 mph is why we should all take advantage of seatbelts. Not that the lack of using said restraints in anyway absolve Helsell of his reckless act, using them would have increased the children’s odds of surviving the trip.
“It might have been lawful, but it wasn’t justice.”
The Mother was correct on both counts.
Extremely light sentence for murdering 2 young girls.
So what does it matter if he was an astronaut, an Air Force Academy Graduate or had a storied life? He murdered two young girls.
Another case where the justice system (judge) failed miserably.
