Fox Slips to 3rd Place in Primetime for First Time in 17 Years

Breitbart: Fox News slipped to third place in the primetime demo for the first time in 17 years last week as competitors CNN and MSNBC enjoyed a surge in viewership thanks to a chaotic news week for President Donald Trump’s administration.

For the week of May 15-19, Fox News averaged just 497,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted key demo of adults 25-54 during primetime hours, compared to CNN’s 589,00 and MSNBC’s 611,000, according to the Hollywood Reporter, which cited data from ratings tracker Nielsen.

However, the longtime cable news king remained second in total viewership, with an average of 2.41 million viewers over the course of the week, compared with CNN’s 1.65 million and MSNBC’s leading 2.44 million. Fox News also remained in the lead in primetime and total day viewership for the month of May.

SNIP: Gee, do you guys know why Fox is slipping? To paraphrase a comment I saw- Fox went left, so its viewers left.

  1. It’s a well known pattern that the spoiled children of business titans usually destroy in a few years what their fathers took decades to build.

The Murdoch boys are living that pattern. Rupert would be smart to kick them out while he still is alive.

Breaking this pattern is what makes the Trump children so remarkable.

  2. “Gee, do you guys know why Fox is slipping? To paraphrase a comment I saw- Fox went left, so its viewers left.”

EXACTLY. Shepherd Smith was the first strike, then Kelly what’s her name, and then there was Bob Beckel, proclaiming that the president lying or Reid lying was perfectly acceptable, and standard procedure for the left. BYE, BYE.

If I wanted to see and hear fictionalized ‘news’ there are a myriad of channels and outlets that are well practiced in dispersing it.

Besides, one of my consistent gripes: Everything is NOT a ‘NEWS ALERT!”

  3. There used to be a popular restaurant in town here. The parking lot was full the entire weekend.
Then the old man died and the restaurant was bequeathed to his kid.
The kid is in jail now because in less than two years after Dad died junior burnt down the building because it bankrupted him.
He just had to come in and make his mark, and made changes to the menu, to pricing, to staffing. Everything that had attracted customers and created a base, junior threw out the door.
The kid screwed up the place so badly that customers quit going, but he still had high overhead. He was overwhelmed. He torched the place.
And we’re seeing the Murdoch brothers doing the same thing. Screwing up the formula Rupert (and more so Ailes) had created.
It isn’t easy to create customer loyalty. It is very easy to destroy it.

  4. Good job, James and Lachlan Murdoch. You destroyed a $2.5 billion cash cow. I bet Newscorp shareholders are reeeaaal excited for the day when you two dunces run the company.

  5. Why would I want to watch talking heads who try to sound like Chris Matthews and Rachael Maddow when I can just watch Chris Matthews and Rachael Maddow? Or not watch either? Good job in destroying your business model, Fox.

  6. @Jon, @MrAnthRopy – it’s not as if Rupert wasn’t warned. His boys almost destroyed their British newspapers a few years back and barely escaped a prison sentence. Rupert banished them for a time but now is giving them the crown jewels.

Of course, with a cable station revenues can only fall so far. Each cable station gets a monthly fee per subscriber whether anyone watches or not. Advertising revenue is a bonus. That’s how CNN and MSNBC managed to survive with no viewers for so long.

Solution: cut the cable and watch Fox shows you’re interested in on YouTube the next day.

  7. My first clue that Fox was slipping left was back in 2005 when Shepard Smith was making that big stink about “Where is the government” in the aftermath of Katrina

What really sealed the deal was when my leftazoid sister used Smith to bolster her argument — Even Shepard Smith says the Bush Administration was slow in its reaction to Katrina.

To which I quipped — Gee whiz, Lefta, when did you become a fan of Fox News? Wasn’t it just three seconds ago that you were running down Sean Hannity?

  8. Totalling up all three networks’ viewers, only about 1.7 M viewers. Out of a nation of 330+M. Tiny viewership. Add in the 6 pm news for ABC/NBC/CBS/PBS and still not much– maybe 1 % of Americans.
TV News has, for decades, alienated its audience.
Before CNN, tv news viewership averaged
15-30%. Higher at elections and major events. Now it’s 1% or less?

FOX now is nonstop Leftist talking points, with some token Neocons to stammer their meek rebuttal, and pretty girls whose sole asset is spandex cleavage.
I DVR Hannity to skip through later, but 3/4 of his airtime is surrendered to Lefty guests, so there’s not much beyond his opening monologue that I care to see. Carlson too is just a RINO host for Tonight’s Guest Lefty Talking Points. It’s MSNBC Lite already, and the Murdoch Heirs will continue killing the brand.

Ready for Breitbart TV, or any other real news source. My cable doesn’t offer America One but I wish them well.

  9. Jerry Rivera, Juan Williams, & Karl Rove were frequently channel change triggers. Then when they added Marie Harf and Zeke Emmanual the channel changes came more often, or FNC is skipped completely.
However, some weeks the news is just skipped entirely because it’s all bad. Terrible things being done in the world and idiot leadership in DC that behaves like spoiled brat children.

I preferred the old time used to be when if I saw SLC my first thought was Salt Lake City.
Now when I see SLC – I think – Sore Losers Club. Membership among others includes; NeverTrumpers, Maxine Waters & Co, AntiFA , Deep State, and many others. It’s better to watch something entertaining or read a book.

  10. I prefer to read the stories I want to read (or watch) on the interwebs, as opposed to passively watch the stories they choose to show me. The 5 is bad enough, but The News Experts (or whatever it is that replaced the 5) is even worse. Don’t these knuckleheads realize that when 2 people on TV are talking at the same time, you can’t understand ANY of them? And if it’s 3 or more, we just change the channel. Sean is a good guy, but he is in full O’Reilly mode now, interrupting his guests before they finish every sentence; too frustrating to watch.

  11. And I helped Fox descend to third place. We badly need a conservative news channel but meanwhile I will get my information elsewhere without spin or libs arguments against truth.

  12. Me too. I stopped making FoxNews must see TV awhile ago. I read righty blogs and if someone on Fox said something noteworthy it’ll be up on a blog somewhere. Fox does nothing now but depress the h*ll out of my elderly parents who love President Trump and who are big consumers of news. I told them to tune out.

  13. Nobody watches FoxNews because it stopped broadcasting news.
There is an audience seeking news. Real news.

Just like their is an audience seeking sports. Sports without agitprop.

  14. You can tune in and watch Shep lecture you about “values”, or Whine Williams turn everything into a liberal political advertisement, or Hannity talk about himself.

I quit watching a year ago (except for Tucker) and spend my time on Fox Business. Lou Dobbs is sharp and Liz Claman can easily hold my attention.

  15. I hope to God someone from Fox is reading these comments. Here is my mine.
Weekends, anyone watching the news has to suffer the immature vocalizations of Elizabeth Pran. She should anchoring a child’s cartoon show. Every single word out of her mouth is like listening to a musical scale… Up and down her voice rises and descends… And the constant WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND APPRECIATE IT. Which is sung using the same cord…. I cannot stand to watch this cartoon woman. Fox news, get rid of her she is unbearable

  16. Stopped watching Bill O’ in 2005, the same year I stopped watching Sheppie Smith. Then in 2008, stopped ALL Fox News, switched to Fox Business, and One America came on board a few years later. As Conservatives, we really don’t have many sources…wasn’t it Patrick Henry who said ‘give me Liberty, or give me death’? Are we going to lay down and let them “death” us?? NEVER!!!
