A new draft animal protection law has suggested breeds with certain problems, including spinal injuries, could be banned.

Sausage dogs [dachshunds] are known to struggle with back problems and can also easily become overweight.

The proposed move has been met with resistance in Germany, with the German Kennel Club (VDH) launching a petition to save the breed.

The VDH has argued that the law would be too open for interpretation when determining genetic defects. More

  5. A properly bred Dachshund ( badger hound) is a hell of a sturdy dog. They should be black and red or red and darker red….The breeders have introduced mini’s and all sorts of colors that is probably the reason the genetic problems come up….Fat dogs are the owners problem, not the dogs. My first dog was a dachshund (Fritzi) and he was 30 pounds of terror that lived to be 16….

  7. AKC and other groups have caused problems for numerous breeds to satisfy what they determined to be the standards they desired. If you looks at pictures of many breeds compared to how they appeared in the late 19th and early 20th century they’re almost unrecognizable.

    Many have no clue about bloodlines and inbreeding but they’re likely the same folks that have problems finding Holiday cards for Uncle Dad and Aunty Mom.

  19. My blonde border collie Kirby is a pure bred. And boy does he know how to herd, my daughter suggested we get him a sheep. Yeah, like that’s all he needs. He is the most active dog that I have ever owned and probably too smart for his own good. He has his own fan club of all the Catholic kids from the Parochial school behind my house when they walk on the sidewalk next to my house to the playground across the street. They love him, we even got a note from the kids about how much they appreciate seeing Kirby when they walk by.

    I second that ‘wgoat! They can hunt and will definitely notify of stranger danger. As always they have to be taken care of and they have a couple of extra needs like ramps and regulated feeding amounts. But every breed has their pros and cons. Have had several over the years and I was a big dog person.

  21. My first dog buddy was my grandmother’s dachshund Fritzel, I was 3 or 4. He liked me because I snuck him food under the table, which I invariably caught hell for. Gram would latch onto my ear and leave me no choice but to capitulate.

    So, where do they stop? Where’s the line?
    How about just leaving people alone with their dogs that they love. Life is short, mind your own business.

  35. Germans – obsessively “perfecting” themselves right into extinction. Death by DEI. They’ve allowed Islamic barbarians to alter their culture to the point it’s becoming unrecognizable.
    No native/multi-generational German in their right mind should support banning Dauchshunds. They are a German national treasure.
