After nearly 10 years in the minors and international play, Gift Ngoepe became the first African to make the majors when he took the field for the Pittsburg Pirates in April. Gift’s journey to the big leagues goes all the way back to his childhood, when his Mom took a job working the concessions for an obscure team outside of Johannesburg, South Africa and moved Gift and his younger brother Victor into a small storage shed right off of first base.

That is one cool story.
Good for him, I hope he stays in the bigs for a while.
Ain’t gonna’ be no white ball players in a few years.
^^^ Actually, black people have been decreasing in baseball since the 80’s. You can rest easy knowing that…
Determination to develop and hone his skills. Wish him well.
Very much love in that room, Ngoepe said.
That says it all.
Fun ballplayer and he’s there on merit and not just a pr stunt.
The best part is…he’s in the National league and plays against the Mets….GO PIRATES!!!!!….LOL….watch him play, he’s not a fluke. Great defensive skills and can hit a bit too…
I have the MLB package and will be watching the Pirates in 20 minutes…of course I will be flicking it back and forth because my Mariners are playing stinkin’ Boston.
Hey Bman, it’s pretty frustrating being a M’s fan, again. 5 games in a row scoring 1 run. I was starting to hope they would go for the record.
Good for him. Escaping poverty in South Africa by coming to America, the land of opportunity.
Hooray! Another african parasite comes to America! Yay!
Hey Joe! They got shutout tonight by Boston. To be fair, the M’s are basically the Tacoma Rainiers at this point. So many on the DL. Lot’s of baseball left….lot’s of baseball.
Nice story, however:
