Glen Campbell Succumbs To Alzheimers – IOTW Report

Glen Campbell Succumbs To Alzheimers

I can think of no better tribute than to repost this video.

This is Campbell performing, to perfection, Wichita Lineman.

In this clip, not yet diagnosed with Alzheimers, he’s performing with his son, the guitarist on his right.

Later on his daughter would replace the keyboard player, becoming, essentially, a nanny, keeping him on track.

His son, in an interview years after this clip, said that his father, even though he was in the throes of Alzheimers, was able to pull out these guitar leads that astounded him, culled from the catalog of decades and decades of licks, and he did them differently every time.

Performing with his kids was the thrill of his life. Even though he was handed a bad deal, how many people get to be this happy late in life?

RIP.

  1. Glen was a multi-talent. He was even great in True Grit, without having to sing or play a guitar.

RIP Glen, thanks for years sharing your talent with us for many great years.

  2. Rest in peace. Glen was such a great musician, and you could tell he really loved what he was doing. He played many of the lead guitar parts on The Beach Boys biggest hits, and toured with them as a Beach Boy.

Thanks for sharing your songs with us, Glen. We’ll keep you in our hearts.

  3. Absolve, we beseech Thee, O Lord,
    the soul of Thy servant,
    from every bond of sin,
that being raised in the glory of the resurrection,
he may be refreshed among the Saints and Elect.
    Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen

  4. Glen Campbell was the guitarist’s guitarist, a musician’s musician, a performer’s performer, and one of my favorites. Thank you for living a productive inspiring life. A tear shed for you.

  5. PHenry,
That was great.Remember him as HB in that late night Sally Hartman,Sally Hartman Comedy? It’s what was on when I worked 3-11.Back in the 70’s. What a flash from the past.

  6. I am pm my phone but if you want to see his very early work or someone can post the work by session players called the Wreaking Crew. You will be amazed at the band’s that they made sound much better.

  7. Jackson Browne wrote a song called “These Days” when he was 16 and many have covered it. I love Glen’s rendition and video. It’s very moving for what he was going through then, even moreso now given his passing. Would someone link/post it?

  8. English is wonderful languageIn no way does it allow you to convey emotional content.
This is my opinion, Glenn was the greatest of all at anything he attempted. There are plenty of guitar players, meaning no offense to the others, Glenn will always be a step up on anybody.

  9. Folks always said he and I looked alike. It was odd to watch he and I age together. I saw Glenn and Andy williams perform together in Branson, Mo. Both were tru professionals. In addition to singing and playing his guitar. Glan played the bagpipes that night Andy related that before Glen was known for his songs he was the top studio guitarist in Hollywood. Not bad for a Oklahoma farm boy. Here is Glen and Roy Clark playing together. Both are at the top of their game. Their fingers know the fret board better than they know their own face. BTW, Glenn is playing a 12 string. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-sExIVBVaw

  10. The Wrecking Crew — yes, I was floored when I learned that Glenn Campbell was among that astounding group of session players before he went to the front of the house with his singing. You will be amazed at the number of singers/bands they provided the trademark sound for.

  11. Thanks Tuesday. If I can find the whole movie I will post it in the bullpen. They made so ,so , many bands sound better.
He could have been a major rock star , but he choose to go the country route. Good call on his part , and for us.
    Rest in piece Glen.
