Woman drove for days in Alaska with husband’s body in casket.

KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) — A woman who drove her husband’s body on a days-long traveling wake in Alaska and used ice from canneries to keep him cold is not accused of breaking any laws.

Officers responded to a call last week to find the body of a 78-year-old man inside an aluminum transport casket.   more

  1. Good thing they weren’t in the lower 48. In many (if not most) states you can’t even move a dead body across the room without falling afoul of the law. Paperwork must be filled out, transport by authorized personnel must be arranged, etc., etc.

You can thank the funeral industry lobby for many of the laws like that, of course.

  2. Question:
What if you were driving home and your spouse died in the passenger seat a mile from your house…
    Would you?
Pull over and wave someone over to call the police?
Drive the last mile and take care of things once you are at home?

    Just wondering…..

  3. An uncle of mine died while he and my aunt were on a cruise in Alaska. He was up in his years and had known health problems but wanted to see Alaska.
They didn’t take the body back on the ship. It sounded like a very complicated process to get his body back to Texas. Other family members had to fly up there to help. Lots of trouble and sadness.

  4. @Unruly: They probably didn’t have long-term storage facilities for your uncle on the ship. On short cruises, they bring your body back to the port of embarkation (at least they do here in Texas).

On the bright side, though, you do get to disembark before any of the other passengers.

    😛
