  1. So sad to see. When I was 14-15, I would get on the South Shore train, my friend would get on at the next stop and we would go to our class at the Art Institute. After class we would grab a bite and wander around usually ending up at Marshall Fields to browse. Buy one chocolate each at Fanny Mae. Walk to the Randolf Street station. Then walk a mile from my stop to home. My very protective mom didn’t seem worried at all. Where did that freedom go!!!

Thirty years ago even, I’d walk with the kids in tow over the Chicago River to the near north side .

  2. I’ve shared this site with several people, one with a millennial child living and working in a “good area”. I always wish him luck when he goes to visit. The shot in the junk and ass o-meter stats are the best.

  3. As a tourist, you are not likely to go into those neighborhoods. Just remember if you are on the expressways from the west or the south, don’t get off until you get downtown. But then the south and west sliders take the red or blue line to get into town for some evening flash mob “fun”. A couple of weeks ago our building engineer (an older gentleman) was sucker punched while asking some “youths” who decided to use our guest parking area as a toilet to leave. And I live in Near North Streeterville — one of the nicest areas. Check out cwbchicago.com They report on all the stuff the news won’t touch because mayor Rahm would pitch a hissy.

PJ — totally with you. When I was young and lived on the south side we used to catch the train at 63 and Halsted to come downtown or take the Archer Avenue bus from Kedzie. You couldn’t pay me to do that today.

I sure miss the old days.

About 10-15 years ago DH, our youngest son and I went to a blues concert in the park. Even getting to the train station that night, which was a hop, skip and a jump away seemed pretty safe. Could be because I was between 2 big over 6 footers. Wouldn’t consider it now.

Especially if one doesn’t have a FOID. 🙂
