Guys… By the Way… Valentine’s Day is Coming

Don’t forget to get her something nice –>

  1. Two coincidences:
    1. I was just about to go out to get a couple of rib eye steaks for Mrs. Uncle and me.
    2. A year ago I bought her that Dyson hand-held battery vacuum Larry mentioned and it was a huge success (not kidding).

I’m in a bit of a quandary about St. Valentine’s Day. My sweetie makes her own jewelry, and maintaining a 24/7/365 chocolate supply in the house is one of my primary duties. On top of that, flowers don’t work because we have a yard and lanai full of orchids and bromeliads, and we’ve got a nice purple and yellow oncidium flowering in the house right at the moment.

So I guess maybe I’ll buy her a bottle of my favorite whiskey.

  2. So many IOTWR marital tips to choose from.
I’m leaning toward the dyson right now.
Do they sell refurbished or used ones?

Last year I got her a $500 snow blower.
I didn’t get one with lights, didn’t want her out in the snow after dark. Unfortunately we’ve only had about three heavy snows for her to practice on our 120 foot driveway.

  3. Cato the big thing about the Dyson is it is battery operated which means it has a probable life of 2.5 to 3 years.
you can get 20% off at Bed Bath and Beyond with their coupon. That is the best you can do though and you can’t buy it there on line, you have to go to the store with your coupon.

I’m not kidding. Mrs. Liberal loved it and I got to tell you, I showed here the video of it they have on Amazon and she was drastically opposed to the purchase. We didn’t need another dated worthless battery powered appliance. And I got it last year for her against her objections, but I bought it as a Ground Hog Day gift, not Valentine. (even liberals aren’t that stupid).

It way better than the video that Amazon shows. I recommend getting the middle of the line, price wise as the battery is a limitation. You will be buying another one in 3 years. But it is worth it beyond what it appears to be worth. It is the best purchase I have made, tool wise, in years and I have a great collection of tools.

  4. We left an infusion session last week, Sweetie says there’s a little car she’d like to look at while we’re in town.
    Where? I foolishly ask.
She replies “At the Porsche dealer just a couple miles from here.”
“Oh, shit, oh shit!” Says me.
We got out cheap, she was in love with a little used Cooper, thankfully.

  5. We take Valentines Day seriously. WE … order take-a-way from our favorite sit-down restaurant. I set the table with our best china, crystal and flatware – linens, and napkins. Candles and soft music too. Hubby picks out a nice wine. He also buys a nice tiny little fancy cake, a card, some flowers (that don’t look on the verge of flopping over) and a gift certificate at my favorite local spa. I get him a card, a funny little gift, and don’t complain about a single thing all day! It’s a great day to reconnect. And we save about $100.00 by bringing the dinner home and plating it – that $ goes to my spa certificate! We both enjoy this “compromise”, and it is a relaxing way to have a very special meal together. And I get that spa certificate. 🙂

  6. Geoff C. The Saltine and I will be relaxing around the house — probably watching a Thin Man movie or Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House — because this Valentine’s Day I’m having surgery (finally!). It will be a memorable V-Day. The following week it’s my turn to chase Geoff C. around the house with the vacuum cleaner. LOL!

  7. AA, I’ve been wondering about you, but not wanting to intrude. Praying for you and Geoff. As far as my Valentine’s Day goes, anything my wife wants to do is fine with me, she makes me a better man. If she is smart she’ll have me make dinner at home.

  8. Thanks, guys. Your prayers and mine have been answered. The best possible situation in the end. Barring unforeseen complications, I’ll be back in the pink in a few months. In the meantime I’m trying to shed the poundage I gained since Christmas — feeling sorry for myself and thinking I may not live long enough to eat enough of all the things I love. LOL!

BB — We haven’t any ceiling fans, I’m relieved to report (see above) 😉

Joe6pak — Does your wife like scallops or large shrimp? If yes, I’ve tried a couple of new dishes recently that are easy, elegant and dee-lish. Glad to point you to them online.

Snow blowers, vacuum cleaners and hammers? One year I received a coffee maker for my birthday and my husband got a pretty straw hat with a yellow flower on it for his — and the hat fit me perfectly.

  9. If you like shrimp, there’s a fabulous recipe for it, using cognac and cream. Really good and a flavor that is memorable. I also made Coquille St. Jacques two different ways; one using bay scallops and one using sea scallops — two different preparations, both really yummy.

Here’s the recipe for Brandied Shrimp with Pasta (from Allrecipes.com) I’ve made it twice in the past couple months. I was wrong, though, no cream. Just a tip: don’t add the shrimp until the end so they don’t overcook.

I made shrimp and grits for the first time last night. Large shrimp, andoulle sausage, bacon, sweet peppers, onion garlic, served over cheddar grits. First time I’ve made such a distinctly southern dish like this. It was good, too. Now I’m back to low fat, no sugar and no carbs for a while 🙁 I love to cook new things and my friend Gerard Van der Luen is always gifting me wonderful, elaborate cookery books in great expectation! I’m looking for an excuse to make Osso Bucco.

  10. Joe — I use Allrecipes all the time. I like that you can scale the recipes, but the best part of the site is that everything I’ve ever tried (because I go for the 5 star recipes) has been so thoroughly tested by other readers who add their tweaks, you can’t go wrong. Also, you can enter an ingredient search for stuff you have on hand or something you eat a lot of (chicken breast comes immediately to mind), and there’s usually a new preparation that is interesting to try.

  11. Here’s our fav summertime Shrimp/Prawn recipe. 2 pounds of Prawns, thawed. A cup of butter melted on the stove with a bunch or garlic added. Put some tin foil on the grill and slice slots in between the grills. Grill the Prawns while brushing generous amount of butter and garlic. Serve with fresh guacamole, home made Pico De Gallo, and corn tortillas. Margaritas mandatory. My recipe for the perfect Margarita is blend 4 cups of ice with Margarita mix, add a couple squeezed limes, blend some more. Through that in the sink and drink the Tequila straight.

  12. Brad that all looks good, right down to the margarita. Here is my foolproof margarita recipe. 1,12 oz can of frozen Minutemaid lime concentrate, fill the empty limeade can with tequila, one can of Budweiser, ice to your liking, blend, and you have a great margarita. I usually just fill the tequila to about 3/4 full, 3 or 4 pitchers and they start to sneak up on you.
