Has Google Created Sentient A.I.?

UK Daily Mail

A senior software engineer at Google who signed up to test Google’s artificial intelligence tool called LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications), has claimed that the AI robot is in fact sentient and has thoughts and feelings. More

  1. Humans can’t create sentient beings. That’s the stuff of science fiction, e.g., HAL, the bad guy computer in “A Space Idiocy 2001”.

Everything in a robot has to be input by a human. The code tells the robot what to do when it encounters a bad smell, the code for detecting and analyzing the smell has to be coded by a human as well as the appropriate response.

If a robot “smells” a lump of dog poop on a sidewalk in 100 degree heat, the code will tell it to emit a “EWWWWW, that stinks” response.

What is that scientists name? Dr. Frankenstein?

  2. I wouldn’t call it sentient. There is a saying regarding computers that programmers understand well: “garbage in, garbage out”. This program, brilliant in design, is not sentient. It is constructed with tremendous capabilities to read and listen to spoken language and then formulate a programmed response. I question the ethics of the persons they hire to study it. What is their bias? What is their political perception regarding human life for example? Ask the computer when human life begins. I will wager it says “after it is born” because that is what it is told to say. Garbage in, garbage out.

  3. “acts ‘like a 7 or 8-year-old”
But does it sniff little girls hair or does it know better?
Does it think like a pedo or does it have a floppy disk?

  4. Looking around me today and back over time, it sure looks like the general characteristics of homo sapiens exhibit a lessening of awareness, thoughtfulness, and critical/analytical thinking. The implication here is that it has taken less and less sophistication for artificial intelligence to approximate what passes for human sentience these days. It won’t be long before Chatty Cathy will ace what passes for the Turing Test.

Homo sapiens is now a misnomer. Should be homo sentiens.

  5. For heaven’s sake :

Being “sentient” and having a soul
    are two non-congruous things.

    many non-human animals are “sentient”

    Single biggest example:
Even muslims appear to be sentient !

  6. Steamtrain Charlie, that’s why I called him what I did. I’ve programmed thousands of telephones. It was only in MDN CACH that everything went tits up. And that was not our fault. Although we did figure it out. There was a reversing gate in the source code. We can’t change that. We can only work around it and hope the people who work the source code don’t fuck up all of our work when their noses are squashed in a pot of shit.
