Officials had declared it a tragic misfortune when Elva Zona Shue was found dead at the bottom of the stairs of her home on January 23, 1897.
Her husband, Edward, was so distraught that he carried her to their bedroom before the doctor and coroner arrived. He washed and dressed the body himself and was very protective of her remains up until the funeral.
