House Republicans Revoke Obama Internet Privacy Rules

Breitbart – House Republicans voted unanimously Tuesday to revoke the Federal Communication’s (FCC) broadband privacy rules, sending legislation to the White House that would undo duplicitous regulation around consumer privacy.

Republicans passed the measure, 215-205, that eliminates regulations set under former FCC chairman Tom Wheeler’s reign over the FCC to block internet service providers from using consumer data.

Internet service providers argued that the rule subjected them to harsher regulations, while social media companies such as Facebook faced lighter regulations. Opponents of the House bill argued that it violated consumers’ right to privacy without their consent.

Congresswoman Blackburn (R-TN) told Breitbart News that the regulations were unnecessary; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), not the Federal Communications Commission, should regulate consumer privacy. She explained, “I think that people should realize that the FTC is the primary regulator of privacy, not the FCC. They have the history and the expertise to regulate consumer privacy, and having more than one agency regulate the same agency creates abuse and government overreach. Businesses need regulatory clarity in order to properly operate.”  more

  1. On its face, I don’t like enabling personal information to be sold.
But I hoped there was actually more to this story than that, and apparently there is.
Apparently the law was a blatant favor for Friends of Obama such as Facebook and Google, so there is less competition for those companies.

  2. I can’t believe that ANY Obama regulation was beneficial for the average American. Nor can I buy that Wheeler, who gave up US oversight of ICANN, is on my side.

This is one of those issues that I’d need to know more about before I start scolding my congress critter.

  3. This may have been a regulation that was good for the regular joe. Even a blind squirrel can find a nut now and then. To be frank I don’t trust GOP congressman much more then I’d trust Democrats to do something that’s right rather that something that’s a payback to a supporter. I’d like to know more about Barky’s rule first. Remember that the FTC hasn’t exactly done a bang up job protecting the privacy of Americans over the years regardless of which party is in power.
