nbc– After four days of deadlock and embarrassing defeats not seen in a century, House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy finally carved out a path to placate a faction of rebels and secure the top job early Saturday, with promises that could come back to haunt him.
McCarthy flipped 14 of his holdouts and convinced the rest to stand down, securing election as the 53rd speaker of the House on the 15th ballot after overcoming a last-minute wrench that scuttled his best-laid plans on the previous ballot. In doing so, he made a series of concessions that weaken the power of his office and expand the clout of far-right members of the House Republican conference, which critics say could complicate his job of governing under a wafer-thin majority.
McCarthy and his allies sensed they were on the verge of a breakthrough on Thursday night after Rep. French Hill of Arkansas and others met with right-wing holdouts — including Reps. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Chip Roy of Texas and Byron Donalds of Florida. The mutiny was led by members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, which is known for wielding raw power and having a high tolerance for chaos to force House GOP leaders to bend to their wishes.
Dear God I hate the mainstream media.
The facts of the article seem legit. NBC/MSM just comes to a different conclusion about the ‘far right’ extracting some concessions from McCarthy: They think it’s a big bad thing; I think it’s a small step forward.
I might be seeing things, but McCarthy has been looking a bit gaunt recently–even before this endless voting business. I wonder what’s going on.
“Perry and Roy declined to divulge details”
Rep. Andrew Ogles, the newest addition to the Freedom Caucus provided some of those details in this morning’s The Epoch Times;
“As has been reported, it will only take a single congressperson, acting in what is known as a Jeffersonian Motion, to move to remove the Speaker if he or she goes back on their word or policy agenda.
A “Church” style committee will be convened to look into the weaponization of the FBI and other government organizations (presumably the CIA, the subject of the original Church Committee) against the American people.
Term limits will be put up for a vote.
Bills presented to Congress will be single subject, not omnibus with all the attendant earmarks, and there will be a 72-hour minimum period to read them.
The Texas Border Plan will be put before Congress. From The Hill: “The four-pronged plan aims to ‘Complete Physical Border Infrastructure,’ ‘Fix Border Enforcement Policies,’ ‘Enforce our Laws in the Interior’ and ‘Target Cartels & Criminal Organizations.’”
COVID mandates will be ended as will all funding for them, including so-called “emergency funding.”
Budget bills would stop the endless increases in the debt ceiling and hold the Senate accountable for the same.”
And adding 3 Freedom Caucus seats to The Rules Committee is huge, this committee decides which bills get to the House floor.
Good if his power is weakened.
Speaker of the House isn’t supposed to be the only voice.
Soon as I realized it wa an NBC article I quit reading it.
Just like a jailhouse snitch I had the feeling someone will cave. 1,2,3, there goes the dominoes. Promises are made & then broken.
A House divided barely able to get bills past, thats what I see.
Prove me wrong.
Typical leftist fake news media hack report. Delete to the trash bin.
Just remember, the Republicans may not have the immediate solution to the problems, but Democrats have definitely created all the problems.
MSM thinks it’s bad. I would say it’s good if it happens, but rules package has to be voted on, that’s a lot of faith to think RINOS will vote for it. Even before last night’s final vote there was already one saying he would not vote for it.
Wow. Clamping down on the Brown Shirt agencies and requiring bills to be on a single subject sounds very good to me.
On face value I like the idea of terms limits, but that may be a case of “be careful what you wish for.”
Politicians take a LONG time to get very little done which, in most circumstances, is good for US. A few conservatives have gotten their collective nose under the tent. Let’s see what happens.
Far Right? you mean not bought and paid for? Not corruptible?
God I miss Rush Limbaugh.
It is Trump and MTG that will be haunted if McCarthy acts as we all expect he will. They put their credibility on the line backing this RINO loser and dragging him across the finish line.
Promises made
Promises broken
Measures of our demise
Dan Fogelberg
Waited until late Friday night when the threshold for majority would be lower, since many members of the House would have prior commitments and need to leave D.C.
Anon, I do believe MTG’s behavior already finished her. All across social media and comment sections I’ve read nobody defending her, instead everyone is calling her different versions of whore. It’s pretty bad when even pretty much 100% of men saw it as well.
As for Trump I’m seeing that about 50/50 and I’ve never seen that before.
Total and complete disgrace to the USA

I new Dan in High School
So glad his music still survives
This swamp hack will haunt us long before we haunt him.
Kabuki. Meet the new boss; same as the old boss. Business as usual, full speed ahead to oblivion.
I thought (hoped) when Ronny left office in ’89 MSM would stop demeaning conservatives as “Far right”. I, at one time, was an optimist. In this case I was just plain wrong! Conservatives will always be “Far Right”!
A promise from government at any level is a shit sandwich in a sack. All the concessions are words, maybe even on paper, written down! Make the ink purple! Put the purple words on 120lb stock, a nice cream color with bits of rag linen in it! Beautiful!
What do you have? Fancy promises. An expensively packaged sandwich. Now open it up and take a bite, you go ahead, I’ll pass for now. Kind of like the COVID shots. Tasty? Yummy? No? You were betrayed? Shocking, you must be devastated, really, devastated! Go wash your mouth out and learn something ya dope.
