How Much Do We Love Our Pets?

IntellectualTakeout

A writer is appalled that some humans love their pets too much.

…our cultural obsession with dogs can lead to some pretty dark places. When asked whether they would save their dog or a foreign (human) tourist, 40 percent of people said they would choose their dog. That number drops to 10 percent when the choice is between their dog and their best friend—which is still appallingly high. I didn’t realize that the fact that a human life is more valuable than an animal’s life would be something difficult for people to grasp, but with stories like Harambe the Gorilla and the hunter Theunis Botha, it’s apparent that far too many people would save the life of an animal instead of a human, and some would go so far as to celebrate the death of a human when it was caused by an animal.

What if your best friend IS your dog?

  1. LOL, I heard another LIB today saying todays “Man Best Friends” are the descendent’s of the “Friendliest” Wolf population and really don’t like humans. I’ve owned a few retrievers this Cat Person should meet.

  2. When people stop having children and are socially rewarded for their pets, what do you think would be the outcome? Saving an animal over a human has turned out to be the least of the problems – a symptom more than an illness.

  3. My dog is my best friend, relationship councilor, social director, stress reliever and constant companion. He embodies every good ‘human’ quality and has none of the bad.
I’d save his life before my own flesh and blood, much less somebody I didn’t know.

  4. I love my cat, Pepper, so much it hurts me. I also love my family. So if I had to save one or the other (some) family members would be first. But a stranger or my Pep? It’d have to be a child or forget it. :/

  5. Few humans show the love & loyalty that my pets do.
Therefore, they’re first on my rescue list.
RosalindJ – I have a grown-up kid with his own pets – any of our combined pack are better people than most people I know.
Maybe the symptom is way too many humans are assholes.

  6. Oh hell yes, I’d save my cat before I’d save most humans. Most humans are disgusting. They’re dishonest, do not seek the truth, and have allowed themselves to become brainwashed and parasitical.
