I applaud Volkswagen for circumventing EPA rules to build cars people want to drive

VW built cars that people wanted, rather than cars bureaucrats love.

So naturally the bureaucrats are teed off.

Volkswagen AG faces penalties up to $18 billion after being accused of designing software for diesel cars that deceives regulators measuring toxic emissions, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Friday.

“Put simply, these cars contained software that turns off emissions controls when driving normally and turns them on when the car is undergoing an emissions test,” Cynthia Giles, an enforcement officer at the EPA, told reporters in a teleconference.

Volkswagen can face civil penalties of $37,500 for each vehicle not in compliance with federal clean air rules. There are 482,000 four-cylinder VW and Audi diesel cars sold since 2008 involved in the allegations. If each car involved is found to be in noncompliance, the penalty could be $18 billion, an EPA official confirmed on the teleconference.

The feature in question, which the EPA called a “defeat device,” masks the true emissions only during testing and therefore when the cars are on the road they emit as much as 40 times the level of pollutants allowed under clean air rules meant to ensure public health is protected, Giles said.

“Public health” my ass. Remember, these are the same bozos who dumped millions of gallons of toxic waste into rivers across the Southwest and then tried to cover it up.

All VW did was follow the letter of the law.

  1. that was my take too. When I heard about the ‘defeat device’ or whatever, I was impressed and it made me want to buy one of those cars.

The 2.0 VW diesel cars have always been very impressive cars with a great engine. They get great mileage and run forever.

  2. I own a 2013 Passat TDI SEL Premium diesel and I freaking love it. I drive at least 20k miles a year and I get 42 mpg without a single issue. It’s turbo, too, and you should see the way I laugh when I run Priuses and Smartcars off into the ditch!

So if my only recourse is to avoid the dealership from now on to keep the fucksticks from the EPA (stands for Environmental Protection Assholes) from fucking with my car, then so be it.

    Don’t tread on me!!!

  3. what, was the epa ticked off because no graft exchanged hands on the skirting of regulations?
everyone knows that you must grease the government bureaucrat skids to play in third world countries.

  4. I drive an F-250 7.3L diesel Behemoth. But I too am so furious at the autoworker unions for stealing GM and Chrysler from their rightful owners that I will NEVER buy another union-made vehicle EVER again.

My next pickup will be a Toyota or Nissan and my next car will be either Jap or VW or BMW. I particularly like the VW CC sedan.

  5. The proudest achievement of my life is crossing a United Steel Workers/Teamsters picket line for 8 months as a scab, until we broke their unions at our plant back in the early 90s (well,ONE of the proudest moments…)
    I hate unions.

  6. Actually EPA “cycle beating” has been around for awhile 😉

True story- I was an engine research engineer in the late 90’s and actually completely calibrated the 4 cyl turbo diesel engine used in a ~ year long advanced emissions research project. We had a full authority controller on it and some advanced schemes like closed loop exh back pressure control via VNT turbo (for EGR), etc. It was cool.

Anyway, the money for the project came from the CARB and EPA, which they got as part of the diesel emissions cycle beating settlement.

    Turbo

  7. Well, isn’t that what VW stands for? Volks = Peoples; Wagon (pronounced (vagen) = wagon = car = any other mode of transport.

I’m glad for the VW company, but sorry that the CEO felt it necessary to step down.
