I Fought In The Battle Of Mogadishu. Here’s What Rep. Ilhan Omar Gets Wrong About ‘Black Hawk Down’

Federalist: Earlier this week, a 2017 tweet from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) surfaced in which she attacked the men who helped defend from starvation and civil war the country she abandoned in the early 1990s. In her tweet, Omar blasted “American forces” for killing “thousands of Somalis” during the Battle of Mogadishu in October 1993. “#NotTodaySatan,” Omar wrote.

I take special exception to Omar’s disgusting comments because I served in the Battle of Mogadishu, which was later portrayed in the movie “Black Hawk Down.” If you aren’t familiar with the real story behind “Black Hawk Down,” let me set the scene for you.

In late 1992, President George H. W. Bush launched Operation Restore Hope in support of United Nations initiatives to restore some semblance of law and order to Somalia, which was wracked by devastating famine and violent warlords eager to use the chaos and hopelessness to establish corrupt fiefdoms.

The purpose of American involvement in Somalia was to protect the peacekeepers tasked with the near-impossible mission of delivering vital food and medical supplies to the starving, war-torn population. As the aid grew, so did the opportunities for graft from warring clans who saw the humanitarian crisis as a way to cement their power throughout the country.

The Habar Gidir clan, one of the more powerful clans around Mogadishu, was led by the notorious warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid, who made the distribution of international aid to those who needed it nearly impossible. Instead of equitably spreading food and medical supplies, Aidid and his henchmen spread terror and death.

On June 5, 1993, two dozen Pakistani soldiers working for the United Nations peacekeeping effort were attacked and killed by forces loyal to Farah Aidid (three Americans were injured in that attack as well). The next day, the U.N. passed a resolution condemning the attack and calling for the arrest of those responsible and of those inciting and organizing other attacks against U.N. forces. The man most responsible for the violence was Aidid himself, who unilaterally declared himself president (he was never recognized as a legitimate political leader).

Task Force Ranger was the 1993 military effort ordered by President Bill Clinton to capture Aidid and his lieutenants so the U.N. could deliver food and medical aid without fear of being attacked or killed by Aidid’s forces. The American soldiers Omar attacked in her tweet — the men of Task Force Ranger –weren’t sent to Somalia for fame or fortune. They weren’t there because of a deep desire to visit the God-forsaken nation of Somalia. They were deployed to support peacekeepers who were desperate to rescue the country from starvation and the ravages of civil war. To do that, they had to capture the men responsible for it.

By the time Task Force Ranger had been launched, Aidid’s network of drug-addled, Khat-dealing gun runners had taken over Mogadishu and were doing everything they could to oppress any and rival clans, including that of Omar, the Majeerteen.    more

  1. There’s a special place….in Congress…for ingrates like Omar thanks to the democrat party.
I have yet to hear any democrat condemn her, which tells me that they all agree with her.

Now she’s just another put upon muzzlim victim using taqiyya to promote disunity in order to usher in sharia.

It’s illegal to call for violence against internal enemies. Otherwise I would. But I’m not.

  2. If she still lived in Somalia she wouldn’t have those fat cheeks. She’s an ungrateful islamist who sees herself as a leader in taking over American government for islamists.

  3. I commend the bravery and love of country of our soldiers. However they have NOT been employed in the interest of our country. They have been employed in the interest of GLOBALIST BANKSTERS and the corrupt government bought by said banksters. Every war our military has been involved in the last 100-plus years has had shit results (emergence of Nazi Germany and communism, big government and socialism in the U.S., the ballooning of the national debt, the rise of world islam, etc. etc. etc. Gee, there’s a pattern here that you might think is actually PLANNED (sarcasm). Without the naivete of young men joining in the fiasco (regardless of intention) this crap would never have happened. Add to this that the military HAS NOT been used to safeguard freedom in this country. Patriotism used against your interest is foolishness. It is a primary fault of conservatives to not recognize this.

This is in no way a defense of Omar. She is a corrupt tool and deserves to rot in hell.

  4. The service men involved in operations in Somalia had no choice in how they were deployed nor the missions assigned. That responsibility rests entirely with our civilian federal government. Make NO mistake about that.

Our soldiers did what they were ordered to do to the best of their ability, and in this case, their ability was incredible. Just a few men fought a big part of that city to a standstill.

They never should have been in country. That was an internal matter not worthy of the first American life lost there. But like all soldiers before them, the choice of their mission was not theirs.

  5. She got her data from the Somali government.
The list of Somali deaths, below, is from Wikipedia.

If you add up the numbers, forgetting about duplications, simply add all the figures,
you arrive somewhere between 2000 and 2500. [I eyeballed the math. Trying to be accurate with numbers gives me headaches. Probably won’t do my own taxes when the post-card tax return becomes reality]. Coincidence I am sure, then again, she ain’t all that bright.

    SNA Militia and civilians:
    200–315 killed
    (per ICRC)[7][8]
    300–500 killed
    (per U.N.)[9]
    315 killed
    (133 SNA militiamen)
    812 wounded

    350 killed
    500 wounded

@Bilyl Fuster – GHW Bush was president at the time. Confirmation.

The British called that “being Shanghaied”. The more pedestrian call it slavery. Are you calling American soldiers “slaves”, @Lowell?

Because most people think that volunteering to serve the Caliph, means you support the Caliph.

  7. I can’t believe this worm is still in this country, let alone Congress. I want her deported. Immigration fraud.

(Has anyone checked out her parents yet? Terrorist supporters don’t rise in a vacuum.)
