  1. It’s crazy that at the speeds those guys go you can have a pile up like that and no one gets killed or even hurt bad. I have a couple close friends that are accomplished drag racers and they have each had close calls, and they walked away from them.

  2. The in car camera shots are awesome.
I hate the stages breakdown of the races.
The Mustang and Camero bodies look a lot better than the Fusion and Impala versions.
However, NASCAR needs to drop the “S” got stock in their acronym. There hasn’t been anything stock about these cars for years. In the Old days they used to have to sell a certain number of actual cars to be able to race them, e.g., Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Super Bird with the giant wing and extended nose.

  3. Most the time a big NASCAR fan. Jimmy Johnson’s dynasty chased me away. I watched this years Daytona, and I’m back. What a great race. Lot’s of new names. The kid driving the number 24 has quite a story.

  4. I’ve seen that video a hundred times and I still don’t see how that took #3’s life. I’ve heard it explained too. I guess it’s a good thing I’m not a race car driver.

Interesting thing is, and I remember watching it live like it was yesterday, the ex drivers in the announcers booth knew he was fucked right away. But what a great wheel. He earned the name the Intimidator.

  6. I don’t follow NASCAR but we do see a little racing on paved surface every year. If we are in town and there is a race and we have the opportunity the ten year old daughter and I will hit the race. My two younger ones don’t have any interest in watching racing… Yet anyway.

We are big fas of winged 360’s on clay and if it were at all possible I would travel to Knoxville for the 360 Nationals some time, but alas… It will never happen. Same week as Omak Stampede and the daughter and never miss Stampede Week.

Considering restrictor plate races are ALL about draft and Aero, I don’t. You need to shuffle cars up to the front to see who has their shit together. Look back at the last 10 or 12 Daytona’s One of the top 5 strongest cars always wins. It might not be fair, but dang it’s fun.

    2
  8. Bob M. If I heard right they are going to have a few races this year without restrictor plates. That will be real racing.
I hate resrictor plate racing, step on the gas and no pick up,fall out of line and fall back 10 cars.
Most fans today do not know that they were turning 210+ mph laps 20 years ago 225 down the front and back stretch.
If that would have been a night race,Wow what a sight.

    4
  9. Joe #3 hit the wall almost head on at 175 mph or close.
No one walks away at that speed no matter how good of a roll cage you have.
They rebuild all of the cars after that crash to make them more safe and then they cut down on the speed.

You may be back…but I’m leaving. If it wasn’t for ‘the wreck’…it would’ve been a very boring race. Essentially No passing, follow the leader, pit stops determine the winner, talking heads telling us how great it is. Not too long ago, you could drive from the back to the front…no way now.

I’m old school NASCAR. it died the day Dale died. (He was my fav, too) when I was in NC…I went to DEI. Pretty awesome to see all 7 trophies behind glass.

I prefer ‘dega for super speed way. “NASCAR separates men from the boys…Talladega separates the brave from the scared.”

I wasn’t a big Jimmy Johnson fan, but his run has to qualify as one of the greatest dynasties in all of sports.

I did get to see E race in Phoenix. He was leading, coming out of 3, lost it, did a 360 in front of the pack, caught it, and kept the lead. Happened right in front of me. It gave me a wet spot. 🙂

One more thing…when the talking heads tell me somebody is a great driver and he’s 22, i get annoyed.

My opinion….NASCAR is now about marketing, public relations, and is a beauty contest…..not racing.

    I like the trucks

I hear yah. I think the difference is I haven’t watched a race in probably 5 years and as it turns out I’ve really been missing them. I did the two day Petty driving experience/school at Fontana. The last half of the second day they get a bunch of cars on the track and get into drafting 101. Maybe kindergarten level. So I know just enough to keep me riveted during restrictor plate races.
They like to talk about the rivalry between the number 24 and Dale Sr. I’ve heard Little E tell the story more than once about how Dales Sr. took Gordon and Jr, into his motor home, sat at the dining table with toy cars and explained to them both how the side draft worked. I do love that sport.

  12. I’m probably the only one here who doesn’t watch or really know the rules, etc. of car racing. All I can say is omg.

I was in a car accident a few years back and right after impact my heart was beating so fast I thought I was about to have a heart attack. How these guys stay so calm – wow.

    3
  13. If you really want to watch good racing you gotta watch it on dirt. NASCAR once was entertaining, not so much anymore. The thing about dirt is, even if one class is sucking one night, there will be other classes that are a hell of a race.

Cheap entertainment too, most tracks in our area you can get in on grandstand side for $10 on a regular night, kids under 12 get in free. If you want to be close to the cars, pit passes are $30.

I’m just afraid the sport will die though, because there aren’t as many kids getting into it as there once were because too many kids care nothing about cars.

Same here. The promoter at Gray’s Harbor Raceway, Fred Brownfield, was laying a chalk line and was hit and killed by a modified car and the track went downhill to the point that we almost lost it. WhenBrownfield was running it it was one of the top tracks in the country.

The promoter from Skagit took over the track a few years back and is rebuilding it.

I have a television for my kids, it isn’t hooked to cable or dish though. My nephew gave me a thing called Chromecast and the tablet puts what I want to watch in the air and the Chromecasy grabs it and puts it in the television. The kids get DVD from the library and I have subscription to PBR RidePass and Lucas Oil Racing. Loves me some clay oval racing.

    Re: Earnhardt wreck.

Dale wore an open face helmet with goggles…for visibility and ease of movement. He wanted to see what was happening around him.

The full helmets they use now were just coming on the scene. Much, much, heavier and restrictive. So they were using the Hans device to keep the head in place.

Dale didn’t use one, didn’t want it, didn’t think he needed it. Upon impact at 180 mph his spine was severed just under the helmet.

After that the Hans device is mandatory. This why spotters are so necessary….the drivers head is immobilized so much he cant turn it to see what’s around him.

  16. Dirt track. Where’s Tony Stewart? Maybe the most talented driver ever to sit his butt in a Stock Car? Just asking. Don’t get the wrong idea. I love dirt track. But the issues we see in Nascar are not limited to Nascar. Right?

LOL, ever try climbing through the window of a stock car with a Hans device on? I take up a lot of space. Not fat. And those GD Petty boys loved to run over when I was half way in the car and start jamming on my helmet trying to get me in the car. Im finally thinking these guys are fucking with me, so next time I get half way in and then back out quickly. Freaken guys looked like they were trying to sack a quarter back. At which time I said something like “OK assholes”. We all had a good long laugh. Fuckers. And then they talked my squeamish wife into a 180 mph ride along.
I’m telling you, they’re dangerously normal.

  18. Tony Stewart raced winged sprint cars on clay for sport. He enjoyed that above all else. He got a bad rap when Kevin Ward Jr decided to walk around the race surface and succeeded in wrapping himself around a Hoosier

Local dirt track racing is great. Cheap, exciting. I have 6 tracks within an hour away.

Here they run a class called The Cruisers. Two drivers. One steers, the other runs the brake and gas. Pretty funny, sometimes.

    1
  20. JDHasty

I assume you know, you’re making my point for me. The big crime here was Ward was a youngster, and Stewart was a big Stock Car racer with a bad rep. The guy was an awesome wheel.

    4
  21. JDHasty, I love them. It’s pretty much where we can always be found on Saturday night. We’ve even started traveling to races, it’s kind of fun to see different tracks and different drivers.

    2
  22. I have Gray’s Harbor, Skagit, Demming & forrest Grove OR that I can get to in a couple hours and they run a couple races per year at Yakima. If I am home and they are running 360 Winged cars I will go to the races on Saturdays. There are a couple two day races that I plan for and move the RV there for the weekend.

Ward left Stewart no way to miss him, his only hope was to power up and try to push the car down toward the infield, if he had tried to turn the front wheels left he would have rolled the car and still taken him out. Ward was a dead man walking the minuite he walked around in the groove in a turn. It is also pretty hard to see with the wing in the way. Not that that mattered, there just isn’t any way to make the kind of move that would have been necessary to miss him.

  23. We used to have cruisers here, they were a hoot. The cops always entered and ran the entire race with lights and siren going and since they usually were in last place it looked like they were trying to pull the rest of the field over.

  24. Brad, one of my favorite things about dirt tracks is no matter what one is doing, trying to get their car ready to race, signing in or sitting around bullshitting, when they open it up with the prayer every head bows and when they play the national anthem every person who can stand does stand and shows respect to our Flag.
It is honestly quite something to see when you see drivers, their wives and kids and pit guys run up and stand outside the fence honoring the flag. When I look through pictures track photographers take, those are always my favorite pictures.

  25. Brad,

I have been threatening to go to the Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico some year. Tony Stewart got a total bad rap when that idiot decided to suicide on his car is my opinion. I said that as soon as I saw the footage and I every time I revisit it I come away further convinced that Stewart had zero fault.

    ORWW,

I get that feeling at the rodeos we attend and PBR events as well. Love being around true Americans.

    1
  26. JDHasty, that’s true, another great past time of mine are rodeos. I grew up at the rodeo grounds, I barrel raced, my brother was a bareback rider and then I married a bareback rider.

Some drivers can be funny as well, I loved all the cars with “Grab ’em by the Pussy” on the back. I’m sure some thought it was inappropriate for the kids, but I thought it was funny.

    3
  28. If Kapernick had tried to pull that kneeling stunt in Omak at Stampede during the National anthem someone would have wrung his Goddamn neck. Pretty good chance it would be a Tribal member who decided to have himself a little “chat” with him about respect too.
