If You Build It, They Will Come – Then You’ll Be Left With An Eye Sore

Every two years now we’re treated to the sights of another city suckered into spending hundreds of millions on Olympic venues that are supposed to become permanent facilities used to promote sports and fitness among the locals, which all too often are left abandoned blights.

  1. Future Olympics should be a lot smaller events, since they will have to eliminate the distinction between men’s and women’s events, since we cannot put labels on gender, right?

  2. The whole State of Rio de Janeiro, where the city of Rio de Janeiro is located, is bankrupted. In fact, Brazil is bankrupted, but the Olympic Games are not the real culprit, at least not the only one. Blame it on the Liberal mentality and corruption.

  3. Mother Nature and the feral government took care of the eyesore that was host of the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, CA.
In 1982 the government decided that the arena was not energy efficient so decided to add insulation to the roof. Designers calculated that the heat from the ice making machines would prevent snow build up on the roof, which was not designed for heavy loads

    Adding insulation flattened that bitch.

  4. As someone who made some money from the Atlanta Olympic games I can tell you it’s a big machine for a group of companies (who kick back big time to the Olympic organization) and a disruptive bust to most of the people in the city where the games take place.

The taxpayer gets a big bill. The Olympics megamachine swoops in and makes a lot of money. Lucky few locals get some scraps off the table.

For ages, folks in Atlanta thought they’d make big bucks renting their houses and apartments. Wrong.

  5. Before every Olympics is the Rape the Taxpayer Olympics followed ofter the Olympics by the Sell the Ruined Structures and Land on the Cheap to Rape the Taxpayer Again Olympics.

  6. The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics were, as far as Olympic games go, fairly cost effective. The city refurbished the Coliseum, which had been built for the 1932 Olympics. Several university facilities at UCLA, USC, Cal State Fullerton, and others were used for sporting venues. The Rose Bowl and Dodger Stadium already existed. New facilities were built with an eye towards future use by the universities.

But the 1984 Olympic committee was headed by businessmen, including Peter Ueberroth. By 2028, LA’s liberal democrats will likely be in firm control, and I expect a typical liberal boondoggle.

  7. When growing up my family would once in a blue moon travel through Queens L.I. on our ventures to upstate NY. Sure enough we’d see the globe and 2 silos (seen in Men In Black) from the ’64 Worlds Fair rotting away. Looked much better when I was there in ’64.

  8. @ Vietvet I guess you didn’t hear about the gigantic dome being built over the city of Houston that will be finished by then. A forty foot tall thermostat will simply have to be set to 24 degrees F and it’s only a matter of turning on the overhead sprinkler system. Boom! Instant snow.

  9. Not a fan of the Olympics, the politics have ruined the ‘games’.
Just like politics have ruined most of the sports I used to love.

I would rather watch ‘American Ninja Warrior’, where they only compete against themselves, and all the competitors cheer each other on. The course is grueling and watching is fun. And as far as I can tell no politics (yet at least).

  10. @Wyatt, Insensitive Progressive Jerk(😁),
I worked security at the archery venue during the ’84 Olympics in Long Beach where I was a police officer. The venue was used pretty much as is and so was the volleyball held at an existing structure. They dressed up the El Dorado Park with colorful, decorative structures at the entrance and that was about it. It was just fine without huge expense. 👍🏻
