Illustrator: “I Look Around and I Say, ‘How The Hell Did That Guy Do It?” – Mac Conner

Mac Conner is not a household name like Norman Rockwell or N.C. Wyeth, but he should be.

The 103 year-old original “Mad Men-era” artist is still around, and the Delaware Art Museum has collated a retrospective.

I wasn’t aware of him. I love this guy’s work.

ht/ illust8r, of course.

  1. What’s all the fuss? Just another white guy glorifying white privilege. I didn’t see any awareness of the artist’s responsibility to transgress social morays and give voice to the voiceless oppressed masses.

  2. 💯 MY SAYING ABOUT ART 💯

As I walk through contemporary art museums (I call that crap “temporary”) I say to myself,

“If I can replicate this, it ain’t art.”

  3. I’m always amazed at how some people just have the gift of art – being able to render a likeness in pencil or paint. Even more so when it comes to sculpture in stone, which is subtractive in method.

  4. I’m offended that there is no mention of Delaware’s Senator from this era, the original Mad Man, “Bite Me” Joe Biden. No mention, no credit, no attribution, no respect, no acknowledgment of the man who made the drive through State of Delaware and this artist famous.
That he can’t now draw a straight line qualifies him immensely for drawing Joe’s portrait.

  5. Uncle Al-Moray’s also have what I refer to as stud teeth. Two in the roof of the mouth and two in the bottom, offset so they can grip something and it will not get away. They like to hide out in reefs or ship wrecks. Not useful as a household pet.

  6. At first I thought I was hearing Julia Childs. That guys’ artwork is amazing. It reminds me of Van Kaufman and Art Fitzpatricks’ car paintings. Very 60s/70s, better than the cars that were eventually produced.

  7. Plain Jane, “clean lines” is exactly what I was thinking, too! I know that I’ve seen some of his work, but like Plantsman, I never knew his name. Clean is just a good description.

Dangit, just when I’m confident that I’ll never find a topic interesting, someone has to come up with some insightful, skilled, humble, down-to-earth proof that I’m utterly incompetent at life.

  9. Day trip to Delaware art museum imminent.
I have to see this for myself.
    Thanks illustr8tr.

As for other east coast travelers, this Saturday at 930 and 1100, a presentation of Patrick Henry’s older daughter will occur. Mrs Henry went insane after the birth of her sixth child and Patsy was charged with her care.

I’ve got to tell you that I went to the Thomas Jefferson thing two weeks ago. It was enthralling. The dude looked like TJ. Knew his stuff. AWESOME.

It’s at Hanover Courthouse, the oldest functioning courthouse in America. If you’re cruising through, by all means drop in. It’s free. But donate.

    It’s not far off I 95.
