After roughly 800 weeks of being forced fed through a tube, Irom Chanu Sharmila went to court today to declare her intention to end her fast. She started the hunger protest 16 years ago to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that gives India’s military a free hand to repress separatist insurgents in seven Northeastern provinces.
Sharmila has decided to change tactics and run for office as a means to get the law repealed.
