Is there a positive spin for this?

Trump sides with Democrats to raise debt limit and fund government for 3 months.

abc -President Donald Trump has agreed to support a three-month extension of the debt ceiling and government funding through Dec. 15, siding with congressional Democratic leaders over his own party and setting up another fight over must-pass fiscal legislation later this year.

The deal, which would tack on the limited extensions to Hurricane Harvey relief funds, was announced following Trump’s meeting at the White House with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders.

“We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One after the meeting. “We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred — very important — always we’ll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it.”

Republicans have long favored a long-term increase of the debt ceiling, which the United States is expected to hit later this month.

Earlier this morning ahead of the meeting, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., called Democrats’ proposal to tie a three-month debt extension to hurricane relief funds “ridiculous,” and accused Democrats of playing politics.

In the White House meeting, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Ryan all call for a longer-term hike of the debt limit to prevent a U.S. government default. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin also supported that position, according to sources in the room.

After Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., objected, Trump agreed to a short-term proposal to fund the government and extend the debt limit for three months, in line with Democrats’ initial position.

Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and White House advisor entered the Oval Office near the end of the meeting, which soon veered off topic, according to sources briefed on the meeting. The appearance of Trump’s eldest daughter visibly annoyed the Republican leaders, according to a source.

Earlier Wednesday, the House of Representatives approved nearly $8 billion in Hurricane Harvey relief funds Wednesday in an overwhelming bipartisan vote, the first of several expected installments to aid recovery in areas devastated by the massive storm.

The bill was approved in a 419-3 vote, with three Republicans voting against the proposal: Reps. Justin Amash, R-Mich., Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky.

  1. President Trump conceding anything to any (R or D) member of congress ticks me off. Ivanka, I’m not too happy with being in the White House either. I’m fine with a government shutdown, the less they do the better off we are.

  2. Trump side with Democrats is a misleading title.

Trump called Dem leadership to the White House and struck a deal. I’m not sure how I feel about this yet. May take a couple days to see if it has any effect on the RINO’s. But I was listening to Tom Sullivan today and people who seemed to be conservatives calling in and saying “Why Not, the Republicans are worthless”. Vote all the RINOs out.

  3. BB — I think you are on the right track in your thinking. Trump, it seems, has initiated a strategic battle with the congressional R’s and is hitting them hard on their intransigence on health insurance, tax reform, immigration, and his other marquee issues. If he can show conservative voters their isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the R’s and the D’s, it’ll disconnect people from the illusion that “R” doesn’t mean the same thing across the board. And this, I think, is laying the groundwork for the next elections — practical concerns about specific issues aside.

  4. Congress has divided itself into two camps] Camp 1: the willing Camp 2: the unwilling
President Trump decided to go with camp 1 instead of beating his head against the wall with 2
the entrenched Republican elite left him no choice!

  5. AA, when I first heard about this today I laughed. Fing Trump IS the Honey Badger. He just don’t give a shit. First time I’ve listened to any talk radio in a while today and I was surprised at the amount of anger at the Republicans. People are Pissed. Actually to be more accurate more people are Pissed than I thought. It was one call after another.

  6. AA, don’t you think conservative voters already feel there isn’t a dimes worth of difference between the R’s and the D’s. I’m fine with Trump taking the battle to everyone in congress, and let’s see who joins him.

  7. I don’t have a problem (yet) with this. President Trump went around the door stops (Ryan and McConnell) to get what is NEEDED. Reagan worked with Tip and I don’t think President Trump is a Republican or Democrat–he is a man who wants to get stuff done because he loves this country.

  8. I’m going to side with BB and Corky. If Ryan and the turtle don’t want to work with him then Trump needs to work with those that will. We are tired of the obstructionist and next election we start working on the RINO’s

  9. There will always be a crisis reason to continue maxing out the credit card.

He will never give the Swamp a reason to blame him for a shut down.

It’s because the Law is an ass and the United States as a civilization is a fairy tale adults tell each other to avoid that reality. They keep repeating it until one day they realize the Tooth Fairy isn’t coming.

  10. POTUS is showing the little bitches, Ryan and McConnell that he can go around them. I don’t blame him one bit. If they won’t deal with him, why should he sit back and beg?

As much as I hate the Dems, I hate the perfidious GOP just as much.

This will blow Lefty and GOP elitist gaskets. Hilarious.

  11. We should not be surprised when the first instinct of an expert deal cutter is to cut a deal with people who are willing to deal. I just want to know what the expert deal cutter got for the deal he cut.

Gosh. The expert deal cutter did get something for cutting this deal, didn’t he? Like, I dunno, maybe staffing a few vacant seats?

  12. It would have been done anyway, after weeks of kabuki theater,on whatever terms the Dems presented to the GOPe. PDT just cut to the chase and took away Paul Ryan’s fidget spinner. And doing it the day after he dropped the DACA bomb in the RINO bunker. Disruptor in Chief. I approve.

  13. The Republicans are proud to be “Not The President’s party.”

As for the peasants? The Democrats consider the debt ceiling “sacred”? Really? How about a 60 day extension tied to a new federal “Defense of Marriage Act”? How about a 30 day extension tied to funding immediate deportation proceeding against all DACA registered invaders? How about 90 days tied to no federal funding, of any kind, to any institution that deal, in an way, in abortion? Or how about, the consummate deal maker just come up with a way to screw the peasants, to keep non-partisan Wall Street fat and happy?

I’m pretty positive about the last option.

  14. AA, not sure if you put me in the skeptics column or not, but if you are you have misunderstood. I’m on his side and approve, but I don’t like pelosi and schumer and company appearing to be winning anything. And I think going to Mars is not such a good idea.

  15. joe6pak

Consider he’s driving a wedge in the Uni Party. Another benefit of this move. He also has an infrastructure package coming up. Something the Dems love. At the same time, Tax Reform. Which is his Ultimate Goal right now. All in all I’m thinking it was a shrewd move.

  16. No Joe, I’m not putting you in with the skeptics. Have you been bothered by all the smoke and ash this past week? First we had almost 2 weeks of B.C. smoke and now this. Ash falling all over the place. The hottest days of summer and I have to keep all our windows and doors closed! The sun is this red, flinty thing in the sky and I can see the ash streaming by like a snow storm under the street lamps at night. I’m trying to finish painting my house for crying out loud. I’m hot, I’m tired and I’m close to blowing a fuse. The last thing I want to read/hear is how Trump isn’t doing this or that thing right or the way everyone, individually, would have done it. Blah, blah, blah, blah.

    Calgon, take me away!!

    lol!

  17. He ran over Congress with DACA then he backed up and ran over those two obstructionist little biatches Ryan and the Turtle. Obama’s u Constitutional bs is almost entirely their fault. They refused for 8 years to check him. Now even The Republicants are going out of their way to not just obstruct a Republican POTUS but to defy the will of the people who elected him. They left him no choice and he rolled over them. Good. I also think he knows he can’t trust Chuckles and Nutsi.

  18. Great! Trump went around McConnell and Ryan to please Pelosi and Schumer…This is great! Increase our deficit indefinitely under his presidency. Place all of my children under more debt…great! Are you all insane!
This isn’t a football game that ends in 3 hours. Debt ends like Venezuela.

  19. AA, yes the ash and smoke are terrible. I can’t imagine how bad it must be closer to the actual fires. The only good thing about the smoke is that it blocked out enough of the sun that it didn’t get as hot as predicted. Those guys that are smoke jumpers and fire fighters have one hell of a tough job!

  20. AA, I *get* it with your “attitude” stuff. I hope you *get* it with my “show me the money RESULTS!” stuff.

It’s NOT a matter of my patience. It’s NOT a matter of my faith. I gots plenty o’ boths.

    It’s ALL about Trump.

    It’s mostly about TWO THINGS
    1) Though it IS about his priorities (the positive),
    2) It’s more about (at a minimum, the appearance of) selling out on some of the basic campaign promises (the negative).

NO ONE cares about Trump “exposing the ratbastards” in the House and Senate…just about EVERYONE has known about them for years! AND – I’m pretty sure you missed my (delayed) response to you in another thread – it clearly doesn’t matter A HOOT for the constituents of Ryan, McConnell, Graham, and Co., since they’ve re-elected these jerkwads OVER AND OVER! NO reason not to AGAIN!

SO: I don’t for a nanosecond buy this CR*P about any grand psychological scheme which is going to bring Trump a better House and Senate than he already has…TO THE CONTRARY!

The FIRST TWO YEARS are the years to DO IT ALL…’cause ya ain’t gots much more if’n ya’s don’t produce up front!!!

Put up or shut up (not you, TRUMP!) is the mantra of politics.
Not just I – AMERICA – needs to see more results.

  21. My take is the Uniparty RINOs wanted a longer term raising of the debt ceiling to get them past the 2018 election. Trump gets what he wants for Harvey and congress gets to debate the debt ceiling and budget (not continuing resolution) just before the primary season.

Let us see who doesn’t want to fund the the previously approved wall with taxes from Mexican illegals” remittances.

  22. OK Boys. That Fing debt ceiling will be rising for the next couple years. It has to to for Obama’s shit policies. They don’t unwind over night. Think about it. The only thing that will turn this tide is Trumps tax plan.

  23. This is a pretty shitty game he is playing promising a shutdown then kicking the old can down the road with the same people who say he is not for for office. I am amazed at the level of optimism here. That wall needs built or there is no 2020 daca was promised away day 1 now he says he may not even do anything after another 6 month reprieve. Then the same people he tweets non stop about he makes a deal with after removing every last conservative from his staff. I love dreamers I’ll always raise the debt limit I think Congress will do something or I won’t. My faith is fading pretty quickly.

  24. Joe — Yeah, the smoke is terrible up here. I gauge the air quality by our view across Lk Washington and up to Phinney Ridge. If you can’t see the I-5 bridge, you know it’s bad.
We’re supposed to get a little rain tomorrow night and the wind is supposed to shift, heading east instead of west. That will help.

CoD — I really kinda disagree on a couple of points, but I think you already know that, huh. As for results, I truly understand the anxiety. Hells bells, we’ve been so beaten down, let down and frustrated for so long, we’re like starving people standing in line outside the soup kitchen, worried they’ll close down or run out of soup before it’s our turn. I get it. Do take heart, though, in the over 100 things Trump has already accomplished. Heavens, getting out of the climate deal and renegotiating NAFTA, getting out of TPP and leaning on China, are just 4 amazing things that wouldn’t have happened under Jeb! or Killery. Top those things with NoKo and hurricanes and I can’t imagine having his job, yet he keeps showing up on time, with the right resources/people and still smiling in the face of all that has been thrown at him. I can’t afford the luxury of a negative thought.

  25. @Brad, you’re not that stupid, I know it! You gotta stop your Trump train and get on his ass like the rest of us who voted for him! Stop with the rah! rah! The election is over.

  26. Meerkat
I’m not going to battle with you guys anymore. Talk to me at the end of his first term. In my opinion his current situation is about 1000 times more dynamic than anybody understands and I think he’s handling it like a winner. He’s outplaying everyone involved.

  27. Czar all is well. They will not knock us off of our path.
Stay strong and never forget that Trump has not forgotten us nor will he.
8 Month’s ! Look what he has done , the best is yet to come.

  28. @Brad: “Talk to me at the end of his first term. In my opinion his current situation is about 1000 times more dynamic than anybody understands and I think he’s handling it like a winner. He’s outplaying everyone involved.”…
…And losing Big! (as he likes to say)

  29. I don’t trust the Democrats. Ever. Trump better have a very good reason and a well thought-out plan in place because they will exploit any weakness. Pelosi and Schumer are incapable of negotiating in good faith. He better never turn his back on them.

  30. BB — haha! Have you ever tried a Pimm’s Cup? It’s Pimms #1 on the rocks (chimney glass), a couple shots, fill with ginger ale and put in a lengthwise slice of cucumber (optional). Really refreshing on a sultry summer evening.

  31. What no one seems to be acknowledging is that Trump wants DACA to become law. That’s not what I thought he meant when he promised to end it. Regardless, I wish he would use DACA as a bargaining chip to get funding for the wall. But that’s obviously not the route he’s taking.

  32. Meerkat what the hell. And Dianny. Has he lost yet.
Get back to me when he is on the ropes.
He is forcing the Rino’s hand. Let it play out.
He has always said he will work with both sides for the best of the country.

  33. JOE
There you go. These Cxck Sxckers campaigned on repeal and replace for how long? Trumps pissed and they totally missed the message. He would get more done in the next three years working with Democrats than Republicans. That’s the message. And the truth.

  34. I have to wonder why Trump didbn’t use his bully pulpit (or bully twitter) to vilify the Left…something along the lines of, “Americans need our emergency support due to the hurricane, and the Democrats are holding it HOSTAGE!”

I would feel *oodles* better if I understood why he took this step.

It makes me ask, “What’s the next sell-out? Offering illegals some form of amnesty?!”

  35. 1. I voted for Trump.
    2. He is going against his campaign promises.
    3. Rah! Rah! Trump is getting old. The campaign is over.
    4. He IS president now, this is REAL, not just bullet points on a white board of what he will do if elected, he IS doing this crap.

  36. Can anyone answer:
From what I have read, Trump had the choice of
    A) a crappy, unlimited 18 month GOP extension, and
    B) this 3 month Dem raise

BUT, what I would like to know is: what is the reaoning behind a shutdown in 3 months VS now? Sure, Trump will offer up his own budget in 3 months (I thought he had his own done already), which will NOT pass, so it just kicks the can 3 months down the road…and who knows what *other* crises will be going on at that time, versus what we know at the present?

  37. Just a guess but he got the debt ceiling lifted just long enough to get through the hurricane season, but not long enough for congress to have another spending spree.

He also showed GOP leadership he meant what he said about getting his agenda through one way or another. That was a major shot over McConnell’s bow to get off his duff.

  38. McConnell is the enemy and Trump has known that all along.
A “shot over the bow” means nothing to McConnell (just cheap posturing), as long as his funders either A) get what they want, or B) are able to prevent Trump from getting what he wants.

  39. Abigail Adams said, “If he can show conservative voters there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the R’s and the D’s, it’ll disconnect people from the illusion that ‘R’ doesn’t mean the same thing across the board.”

Abby, by definition, conservatives are the ones who separate ourselves from the typical Republicans. That is why we consider ourselves conservative and not just “typical R’s”. And we have known of this quid pro quo between the RINO establishment and the dems for a decades. We don’t need Trump to teach this to us. It’s the non-conservative republicans that need to be taught this. Do you really believe that conservatives are the problem? And Also believe they are the ones who don’t understand that there is little difference between establishment republicans and establishment democrats? And further that Trump needs to teach conservatives that they are a problem? So that is your explanation of why Trump is doing this???

  40. TO Meerkat

RE: “show conservative voters there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the R’s and the D’s”

I get that…and it includes the moderates, and average disinterested Americans as well!

    My only point is that:
    1) this has been shown REPEATEDLY for at least the past 4 if not 7 years. Showing the RINOs as spineless? That’s news?! NO. Showing the Dems as pro-illegals? That’s news?! NO.
    2) YET: few of those whom we would like to “wake up” haven’t to date.
    3) I assume the OBJECTIVE of said approach is to improve House and Senate so they will support more Trump Agenda Items. If not, what IS the objective?

  41. To Czar of Defenestration,

I think I see your point.

But Three months from now: Trump says, “Hey Chuck and Nancy, remember how I worked with you?”

    Chuck: “No.”
    Nancy: “No.”
That’s how the dems operate, take, take take, no give.

Also, there are people on this site who don’t seem to understand that besides themselves being PART of the Trump base that believes he plays 7-dimensional chess, another big part of his base are Conservative Evangelical Christians who expect him to adhere to most of his campaign promises. And also stop playing in the sandbox with Chuck and Nancy.

  42. Geoff C the Saltine:
Why in Lucifer’s reach are you jumping all over my chili?

Did I say the President lost?

I am stating fact: The Democrats can’t be trusted and Pelosi and Schumer do not negotiate in good faith. Do you disagree with that?

Knowing what I know about the Democrats, I sure as hell hope the President has his ducks in a row and never turns his back on those cretins.

If you think I am implying that the President fucked up and lost is a wild misinterpretation of what I said.

For the Democrats “bipartisan” means “Republicans cave to our demands and we skip away feeling like we pulled one over on them.”

My hope is that Donald Trump has a ace up his sleeve and pulls one over on them.

  43. and now Schumer will add the dreamer act to every bill.
Brilliant. Sure would be nice to have the 150 Billion Obama gave to Iran
to use for these storms. Tweet that Mr. President.
Trump teaching us there is know difference between R’s & D’s
no shit! it’s called the Tea Freek’n Party!

  44. I don’t like this deal but I think The Deal and a “W” on the board is all that matters to Trump here.

We got something done. That’s it. Got some points during Harvey now parlay that into the next thing.

In football, you establish the run to setup the pass.

In business, you sometimes take a less than ideal offer to get a foot in the door for better deals later.

What was the first thing Reps did after the election? Anyone remember? They tried to vote themselves a pay raise. If shooting yourself in the foot or stepping all over your dick were Olympic sports, Ryan and McConnell would take the gold and silver in every event.

The truth is that Establishment Republicans want to do a deal with Trump less than the Democrats do. And that’s where we are.

  45. At some point the GOP either will understand that 2012 was the last chance they’re ever going to get, and they fucked us anyway, and now we’re out for blood.
Or they won’t – either way, fuck’em to hell.
